View Full Version : [RaQ 550][DNS] Adding domain withoud hostname not allowed :(

Hiya,

After creating a vhost the dns configuration is done automatically. (there's no other option to add a domain in the DNS admin page) I want my www.domain.com to be accessible by domain.com (without the hostname). The dns admin tool gives me an error stating: An identical domain name record already exists.

well.. when doing a nslookup on domainname it gives me no reply so it really doesn't exist.

This is very irritating because this feature is supposed to be supported. But now I have to edit my db.domain.com.include file and MANUALLY add the A record. This is ok for 1 domain but if you're adding 80 domains or even 10 or more, the workload is getting higher and higher. Time that I can spend better for other things like keeping my server safe and applying patches on other servers.

Is this a known bug on the 550 and will it be fixed or do I have to keep adding that A record manually?

Thanks for your advice :D

Instead of adding a DNS record try setting domain.com as a server alias. Works like a charm for me.

If you wanted DNS set instead turn automatic DNS settings off and add them manually beginning with an A record for domain.com.

That's the problem

The cobalt 550 doesn't let you manually add a Domain in the DNS admin page. :(

delete all record for that domain then go to another otherdomain.com DNS admin page and add an A record for domain.com
save it and you got a new domain, then add other DNS records. Hope that helps.

Ive deleted and readded the A records for both domain.com and www.domain.com and set the reverser records and mx records and still the domain.com doesnt show without the www

Any help would be appreciated.

Ok update!

Found if you will go and create the A record for a domain without the www. prior to even adding the domain to the server then when you add the domain to the server with the host www.domain.com it will add both records correctly. Then you can add your mx and reverse record.

Humm seems if you were to put a new server on the market then the control panel would add records correctly.

I would think so too.. but they didn't :(

I've switched off automatic DNS creation and create the DNS manually by adding an A record for a new domain while standing in the dns config of another one...

Have you figured out a way to view the sites before the domains are fully propagated to the server?

What do you mean by that?

When you add a new site to the server and upload files before you transfer the DNS of the domain to the server. How do you view the site. There are multiple domains assigned to a single IP.

Many people prefer to upload their files prior to transfering their domain name to the server and need to be able to view the site and its content .

On the raq3 and raq4 you simply add a line to the httpd.conf file but will not work on the raq550.

hmm I honestly don't know.. we never had this issue before.

you can always have them fill in the IP of your Raq as DNS server.
