Does anyone know where to buy cheap 1u and 2u servers? It costs so much for rack space that I want to get smaller servers, but I can only seem to find them in the $800+ price range. I've seen a few for $450-500 but they're like Celeron 450s which is too slow. Any help would be appreciated.

Without going into a celeron i dont think your going to get much cheaper, and this is not the advertising forum so you may not get many replies. You might want to try the advertising forum.

You can pick up a good 1U with celeron processor for about $700-750. Any other kind of processor will of course make the price go up. The only way to get it below 700 without getting a used junk would probably be to build yourself, unless there are some people that just want to build it for free. At 700 they are probably only charging you about 100-150 to build unless you just need crapy harddrive etc.

I know someone that is building me a 1U for 700 with a celeron processor and 60GB harddrive and 256MB of RAM with linux redhat 7.2 installed.

Give me specs and i will see what he can do for you, you could possibley get a pentium 3 for close to the same price or amd...

Does it have to be a 1U? Go with a 2U and throw an amd in it maybe?

But anyway, give me the specs and i will send it to him and have him contact you directly and see if he can help you.

Correction on the above post, thats 512MB of RAM, and the celeron is a 1.2Ghz by the way.

PM me and i will give you his SN so you can contact him directly, but please dont reply to post as this is in a way advertising.

Ebay...

I bought a few PIII 650 1U servers for $300 each on ebay.
They came with 128 meg ram and 20 GB hd which I upgraded to 1 gig ram and dual 80's with a raid card.

Woogs,

What seller did you buy from on ebay? And how was your experience in purchasing a server off ebay?

I personally wouldnt think it would be a good business strategy to buy used products at all, let alone on in an auction, and escpecially a used product on an auction over the internet....

Just my opinion, but if its mission critical i would suggest getting new, with warranty, and with secure payment and return policy.

just my 2cents....

Try http://www.interpromicro.com You can get P3 1Ghz, 512MB ram, 40GB HDD, 1U case for about $600.

We brought quite a few servers from them and been running 5-6 months now. They all seem to be okay so far.

On Average for a decent, well rounded server. You will pay at least $700-$800. The lower the price, you will get less features and performance. Celerons are fine for web servers, but they are not exactly the cup of tea, however most serving situations are not CPU reliant but better yet reliant on the hard drive.

Thanks guys, it can be 2u also. I did some looking up on prices after my post and it seems 2u are much cheaper. I've been looking on ebay as well and there are lots of nice servers on there (supposedly barely used) for good prices. Intermicropro does indeed have awesome prices, how is their customer service? Are you sure about that vigor? I used to always think faster hard drives made a huge difference but everyone else on the net disagreed with me and said it was all in the CPU.

interpromicro is pretty good, I've been talking to bensen and he seems to be very kind, I know that fastservers get half if not most of their hardware.

They're very nice people and they have good servers at affordable prices. If you want a contact there, talk with Andy (andy@interpromicro.com) or Bensen (bensen@interpromicro.com). Both will assist you very well :)

When building a server, there are 3 key aspects of performance CPU + Hard Drive + Memory. While CPU speed is important, a faster hard drive, will be able to handle requests much faster. However in any configuration, the right blend of all three, will equal the most perfromance.
