Where to I post a thread for finding out what host is best for me? The forum index is too massive to look at. I was lucky to find this area.

Generally that would be the Web Hosting Forum (http://www.webhostingtalk.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1) though if you're looking for a specific type of service (VSP, Dedicated) you should start the thread in the forum bearing that name.
Keep in mind that you may ask for hosting recommendations, but hosting requests (eg. "Please send me your offers!") are not allowed.
I hope this helps.

If you are looking for a shared hosting provider, you should go to the Web Hosting Forum.
For reseller hosting, go to Reseller Hosting Forum.
For VPS, go to VPS Forum.
etc...

It's all very simple and well organized once you know where everything is. ;)

There is nothing wrong with the index... why fix what isn't broken?

Yes, once you know where everthing is. I remember trying to figure it all out many times before I actually joined. (And there quite a few less forums way back then)
