ljprevo 09-19-2002, 10:53 PM GREAT Deal you have there!
ljprevo 09-19-2002, 10:55 PM Again, great deal, but if you don't want to get banned, you better edit one of these ads out, it is one ad at a time.
If you have more than one plan you should ad them in the same thread.
Just a curtiousy note.
UCG Inc. 09-19-2002, 11:03 PM Thanks for information ljprevo. Our admin tried to delete this thread a few minutes ago, but he got an error message message saying his deletion attempt was not permitted.
UCG Inc. 09-19-2002, 11:05 PM Hi Moderator,
Our apology for the infraction of double postings. We were not able to delete the other thread. Can you assist?
Thank You.
Onture 09-19-2002, 11:15 PM wow, Internap bandwidth at that pricing.
ljprevo 09-19-2002, 11:15 PM Just edit the thread and delete it out.
I would use this $49 thread and add the $99 ad to this one.
Edit out the $99 thread and apologize or you may see some flames.
I have your site bookmarked. :D
Onture 09-19-2002, 11:50 PM How many plesk domains do you get with these servers?
Can you get extra IP's? if not free, how much?
How much for extra 40gig hdd/512mb?
:D
UCG Inc. 09-19-2002, 11:57 PM Hi VS- Lap,
The Plesk control panel comes with 1 domain license. Installation is free, but you'll need to buy additional license from Plesk directly. Additional IPs are available at $1.00 each in block of 10.
As for hardware upgrade, it's $150 for an additional 512MB SDRAM and $150.00 for 100GB EIDE 7200RPM HD.
argintxe 09-20-2002, 01:16 AM Interesting offers... but what about cPanel? Do you offer it & how much?
trustedurl.com 09-20-2002, 01:23 AM This just sounds too good to be true...
how can I trust I'll actually get anything if I submit my CC#? Your SSL certificate was issued on the 15th (5 days ago!)...
For that price I'd be ordering a few servers every month!
Allright, how much extra for remote reboot? for cpanel?
And convince me of this: why are you/your company here to stay? (unlike some others?)....
UCG Inc. 09-20-2002, 01:33 AM Hi Argintxe,
UCG is primarily a bandwidth and colocation service provider. You'll need to purchase the Cpanel, Ensim, or Plesk license from each respective vendor.
hotice007 09-20-2002, 01:37 AM Do you have Windows server?
RossH 09-20-2002, 01:39 AM Hi, this looks like a really great offer. I'm just kind of confused.

#2
Under you Network Infastructure you have the williams backbone map, but no where does it mention that you have a williams backbone connection?
#3
Do you just have an internap line and your listing all the providers internap buys from?
UCG Inc. 09-20-2002, 01:40 AM Hi Dhabets,
Yes, it's hard to believe Internap bandwidth can be offered at such a competitive prices but what you see advertised on our site is what'll you get. There's no contract so you can cancel at any time. Beside, most people spend more money on an NFL ticket than our Celeron server.
As for your question, Cpanel is not available and need to be purchased directly from the vendor. All servers have remote reboot but only authorized engineering staff have access to them.
The reason our SSL certificate was issued 5 days ago because we just completed testing our GigE connection to Internap. Our coporate customers normally pays in the 5 figures dollar amount so payment for them is usually done via wire transfer.
mushrew 09-20-2002, 01:43 AM When you guys say "Internap®, UUNET®, Global Crossing®, Genuity®, AT&T®, Qwest®, Cable & Wireless®, NTT Verio® and Sprint".
Does that mean you guys have 8 GigE connections or do GlobalX, Genuity, ATT, Qwest, C&W, Verio and Sprint route to a GigE to Internap?
DK2's point of the network map is a bit strange.
UCG Inc. 09-20-2002, 01:46 AM Hi Dk2,
Internap is designed to select the most optimal route to reach our servers. So if you're near a UUNET pop, then you'll through UUNET instead of Qwest. Here;s a sample from UUNET in Virginia --

RossH 09-20-2002, 01:49 AM So you just buy from internap correct?
mushrew 09-20-2002, 01:51 AM "So you just buy from internap correct?"
If that's the case you guys really should reword the network page. It sounds like you have 9 GigEs instead of having a single Internap GigE that peers with 8 providers.
UCG Inc. 09-20-2002, 01:53 AM Hi DK2,
That's correct. Our customers get full access to eight Tier-1 providers for a starting price of just $49.00 per month. That's why Internap is considered premium bandwidth because it's blended with top global backbones.
By the way, our main site is behind a firewall. To get the best result of for ping and traceroute test, use 66.111.33.253
UCG Inc. 09-20-2002, 01:59 AM Hi Hotice007,
Sorry, but we only have RedHat 7.3 and FreeBSD 4.6 at this time. If you want to send us your MS license, we'll install it for free.
Best Regards.
eddy2099 09-20-2002, 02:02 AM This does look like a great offer. Do I understand it correctly that your basic server cost the same $49/mth even with Win2000 installed ? Are the installed program the same ?
I actually need one for some software testing and perhaps some deployment on the Win2K environment. The price does seems right too.
WebmastTroy 09-20-2002, 02:11 AM Just ordered one of these....can't pass up this good of an offer.
Can't wait!

APC Remote reboot port?
Matt
UCG Inc. 09-20-2002, 02:17 AM Hi Eddy 2009,
Sorry, but W2K is not available at this time. Only RedHat 7.3 and FreeBSD 4.6 servers are set for activiation. However, just send us your WS License and we'll install it free of charge.
Best Regards.
Potsie 09-20-2002, 02:19 AM Just ordered one... I'll let y'all know how it works out.
Great deal BTW!
UCG Inc. 09-20-2002, 02:20 AM Hi Matt,
Additional IPs are available for $1.00 each per month in block of 10. All servers have remote reboot capability but only authorized engineering staff have access to them.
Best Regards.

chrisb 09-20-2002, 05:50 AM Can you install suEXEC, and is there a charge for that?
UCG Inc. 09-20-2002, 05:54 AM Hi Chris,
We'll need to ask our senior tech to determine the time required for this task. If it's less than 15 minutes, we'll install it free of charge.
chrisb 09-20-2002, 06:01 AM OK. Also, I thought you said you'd been in business a few years. Then why was your domain name just registered around the 1st of June, 2002?
ikiwi.net 09-20-2002, 06:09 AM I email sales@ "$49 server"

chrisb 09-20-2002, 06:43 AM Thanks again for your reply, UCG. Can you hold me one of those $49 servers for 2-3 days while I consider it? Can you give this old man of 49, a senior discount? (just kidding). Speaking of old, it's almost 6 AM here and time for me to go to bed. Good nite all.
diederik 09-20-2002, 07:15 AM Just ordered one, I'll let you all know how it went :)
Hostany Web 09-20-2002, 07:34 AM I just ordered one as well, if it goes good, I'll start colocating my servers with them! :)
bfries 09-20-2002, 07:45 AM You have logos of Juniper, Cisco, Fedex, Handspring, Liberate, Agere, Novell, e.piphany and Agilent on your site. They are just floating around - can you tell me what connection they have to your company? thanks
JBIZ718 09-20-2002, 07:47 AM You said earlier that your connection to internap is multi homed.
Internap is a multi homed carrier in its ownself. Besides internap, what are your other connections.
Theater 09-20-2002, 07:57 AM Seems kind of too good to be true, but I can definitely use a dedicated server for my rapidly expanding free non-hardcore adult site. Will you host sites with mature content such as mine?
Moose 09-20-2002, 07:58 AM What he is offering is IMPOSSIBLE! Not even Bill Gate can sustain this kind of price for long!

UCG Inc. 09-20-2002, 11:09 AM Hi JBB,
It's definitely a tough market to raise any amount of money. We spent quite a bit of time this summer talking to various investors about our business model. As for their names, we are not at liberty to disclose that information at this time. A new website in the future will have a complete profile.
Best Regards.

greets,
I noticed it since yesterday night, around mid night. But i was downloading from the east coast, hence it may explain the slow doanload speed. Note: download speed is also a measure of distance, the further away you are, the slower it will be ... Not sure whether that speed is normal though.
ikiwi.net 09-20-2002, 12:59 PM tapster, I hear it too! But looking forward to being proved wrong :)
Anyone got an idea of why I can't access the order page (don't resolve) while other people can order?

It'll be resolved as soon as your ISP dns update, I guess they just set it up not long ago.
If there's anyone that has ordered and received the server, please keep us posted. If anyone has visited their datacenter, please tell us what you saw there :D
DanielP 09-20-2002, 01:57 PM Althou I've skimmed the thread a bit... I'll pose a question.
How do you monitor bandwidth usage?

WCSWEB 09-20-2002, 02:17 PM I can't get to http://servers.unitedcolo.com/ or any of your subdomain links.
Hostany Web 09-20-2002, 02:22 PM From a 10Mbps un-metered Verio server.

Althought they file is too small to be a proper speed test, the result is pretty impressive.
This is about the same speed to fastservers.net (he.net) servers, but unitedcolo has about 10ms ping less than fastservers from eastcoast.

I would say it is actual because in their plan description is says:
No 95th Percentile Rule.
AbbasJaffarali 09-20-2002, 03:34 PM Question: If we get two-three servers with a mix of Windows and Linux, are they on the same network and can they share information?
For example, can I put a stats + email server on a Windows machine, php on a linux and MySQL on the third and get them all working together?
Thanks

Glad to see you Dave from FluidHosting post about it. I was wondering what you thought about it, since you have Internap bandwidth? You think it's legit?

greets,
You can't really do a speed test with a 1Meg files and say it isn't a good result...
A proper speed test should have at very least 15-50 megs in order to let the connection run at the max speed, althought I might be wrong.
BiGWill 09-20-2002, 06:54 PM sure, but even though it's just 1mb it should atleast make it's way up to sth. around 1mb/s (could be my end, sure .... but i tested it on severall machines on big backbones .... and it was all the same) for example:
Visuallink.com, UUnet:
01:05:32 (286.02 KB/s) - `vim-X11-6.1-2.i386.rpm' saved [1136101/1136101] (had over 5mbit/s here in good times ...)
Hostany Web 09-20-2002, 07:05 PM well, wait until my server online and we can tell :D
their speed test servers are getting hammered.

Everything looks legit :) Traceroute from our servers to theirs go through our Internap Border Router via BBN/Genuity and stays there before it went to their Internap's Border Router and to their server. Can't complain about it :) Now what I want to know is not the incoming bandwith, but how they route their outgoing bandwith, will it still be via internap?
I guess if they really buy a GigE from internap, then their bandwith cost does really fall down. It's just hard for me to see how they will make money with only selling around 2-300 of servers.
Regarding the speed test, I can't say anything much since I was downloading all the way acrooss the US. But if somebody would like to compare it with our connection, feel free to download it from http://www.fluidhosting.com/uumap.tar.Z . I would like to see what people get from west coast :) But since the download speed does really vary with distance, it won't tell you much about their network (or ours).
But anyway, really good offer and I wish them the best.

greets,
It's hard to make a fair comparison. Distance does matter. From my network, I can download ftp://ftp.uu.net/uumap.tar.Z (in Virginia, east coast) at 3 Mega Bytes per second (24 mbps) typical (or more). But it does not mean somebody else in West coast can download it at the same rate, eventhough they are inside UUNet network.

JBIZ718 09-20-2002, 07:26 PM All im going to say about the issue is do not be suprised if your outbound bandwidth is cogent based.
Look for bandwidth from a company from Digital Wireworks thats been in business for less then 1 month, and also Internap light or Surepath.
I have more info on the issue, but do not want to go much further on it.

Not bad for somebody in the west coast :) Now try to download that file from uunet. Then everybody will see that download rate does vary with distance. :)
[Anyone know how to trace what are the outbound bandwidth?
Can't do it unless you are tracerouting out from within their network :)
BiGWill 09-20-2002, 07:44 PM /me is waiting for the story behind ... that will light the shadow :D
anyway ... even if the outgoing traffic would be cogent ... the offer would be still very competitive!!!

greets,
I ageed, I'm actully planning to colo, but I'll some more time to plan it out. :)
It strikes me as very odd that their order form is nothing more than a formmail!
But I ordered anyway!
Hopefully, everything works out well!
Onture 09-20-2002, 08:27 PM Just private messaged them, o/s restores are free!
I only quoted FreeBSD though, not sure about others.
tapster 09-20-2002, 08:34 PM says free reboot on the site :)
http://servers.unitedcolo.com/celeron.htm
I called them earlier, and they sound busy... they said they'd try and get my server up today though
JBIZ718 09-20-2002, 08:36 PM i think before we go further we should get what outbound transfer is

Dear VS-Lap,
We use Internap for both inbound / outbound traffic.
Best Regards.

JBIZ718 09-20-2002, 09:01 PM I would be interested in seeing some stats from new customers.

BiGWill 09-20-2002, 10:01 PM you got one? cool!
give us some traceroutes to the outside world :)
so we can clarify that cogent rumor ...
e.g. www.nac.net or www.rackshack.net, www.servint.com and so on ....
greets,
ikiwi.net 09-20-2002, 10:03 PM i get 187ms ping from NZ, most US server are at least 200ms+ for me!
secure 09-20-2002, 10:05 PM hi.. whoa.. what a good deal.. i want to pay via money order.. and i want to get like say 32 ips.. how much would that cost in total and where would i mail it to? email me the reply please.. thanks (secure@fawker.net)
chrisb 09-20-2002, 10:19 PM What kind of boxes are these $49 offers? white boxes? raqs?
Also, UCG, did you ask your tech yet about installing suEXEC for me. I could probably do it, but I've never installed it before, and would rather have someone who has done it before install it.
clocker1996 09-20-2002, 10:23 PM So, has anyone actually gotten their server yet from these guys?
if so, could you post what server you bought, how much, and traceroute a site like www.webhostingtalk.com
so we can see what the outgoing routes are.
also, could you download ftp://ftp.uu.net/uumap.tar.Z onto your server, and show results.
this seems too good to be true.

Private message them, they seem to respond to them quicker. Sent them email about 20 hours ago, no response. But they have been responding to private messages though.

I don't know why but the whole hostmania thread keeps flashing before my eyes:confused:
What I want to know is who are the people behind this business? Names, ages, experience, references etc..
eddie 09-20-2002, 11:03 PM I can only access their main page and nothing else.
Is it me or is there something wrong?
Faggle 09-20-2002, 11:10 PM seems to be you
ACHOST 09-20-2002, 11:17 PM Same with me. Cannot get to contact page or order page or anything else they all time out
Nah...everything works fine for me!
I ordered and they sent me an email saying they have received a lot of requests so setup time will be within 72 hours. Lets see if they can match that!
chrisb 09-20-2002, 11:23 PM Well, I can't really afford one of these $49 servers; but it is sure an interesting offer.
I didnt need a server, bought it just to check them out! Might use it for backups or something.
Onture 09-20-2002, 11:31 PM $49, thats half of my home cable connection I pay for :stickout
just called to find out whats going on since I was told the server would be up tonight.
They said they sent out e-mails with an update an hour ago. I didn't get one.
I was told the setup people would be back tomorrow afternoon/early evening and sunday morning. They hope to have the servers up by Monday.
Lets see...

This is getting interesting. I gotta go tell Aussie Bob, and see what he thinks. :)
Aussie Bob says they're at the beginning stages of their business model - VC $$$$ in the bank - need customers asap - must hit targets - cheap prices - establish business - get momemtum - must become cashflow positive in X months.
So in this time period, pricing will be very favourable. They'll run a negative cashflow using the VC $$$ to make up the difference. Then slowly ease into profitability with an expanding client base [possible price lifts] and hopefully a positive cashflow. Investors must get their ROI. :)
Looks good Chris. What have you got to lose? I take it they give money back guarantees?? Take a shot. Let us know how you go. :)
cascompany 09-21-2002, 12:25 AM Damn hell ... $49 servers :cartman:
and I just bought a Canon EOS 50 last week :(
hrm... do you want some logos? :D

nor did I, but they did reply to my email and PM. I guess they are overwhelmed by the response :) this is what I got :
Due to the volume of new orders currently in the pipeline, your server will be available within 72 hours. An account executive will contact you again with complete login information.
I'm in no rush at this price, and they seem quite friendly all in all. I will post when I get any other news
Thats what I got as well and I didnt have to email them for it! Got it about 30 minutes after I placed my offer. What I find most disturbing is their order form!
got my server (the $49 one) ~ 10 hours ago.. but since I am sick/ill.. I couldn't do any thorough tests yesterday :\

Did I see "cogent" bandwidth in some of those traces?
Cogent is one of the backbones included in internap, if cogent has a shorter and faster route, then the cogent route will be taken.

Um, since when ? Internap uses only tier1 providers and cogent is far from tier1. Im fairly certain cogent is and never will be part of internap!

Since when Cogent is inside Internap? Internap has got 9 providers and I do not see any 'Cogent' words in their proposal to me on using their transit.

same :(
I know someone who ordered the server 5 hours later than me has got a server few hours ago...... oh well
mushrew 09-21-2002, 03:30 AM The only trace with cogent was to Webhostingtalk. Not quite sure why someone posted it but that's what it was. Internap != Cogent.
Hmm....then Im confused!
Can someone then list the 9 tier-1 providers of internap please?
Thanks! :)

hrrmmm remeber the hostmania.net thing? they offered hosting on internap too.. and have a look at their website:
http://www.hostmania.net/network.html
it also includes cogent....
mushrew 09-21-2002, 04:02 AM Hmm that's a weird how cogent's part of the trace. I think it's only being used for local transit however, as you see qwest picks it up after the local hops.
chrisb 09-21-2002, 04:03 AM Why doesn't UCG offer 100% SLA, instead of 99.999% if all of their bandwidth comes from Internap, since Internap has 100% SLA? Could it be because they are not using "just" Internap bandwidth?
Also, the UCG person posted in this thread that they are "semi-managed" servers. Their site specifically says they are "unmanaged". Before buying, I'd suggest everyone read their TOS and User Agreement.
mushrew 09-21-2002, 04:05 AM Well you have to factor in stuff such as router upgrades, power outages, people tripping over a network cable, etc.
simplythi 09-21-2002, 04:06 AM hello, your packages are simply amazing. I have a few questions however, how many domains can I host on the plesk liscense. If I were to provide you with an external CPANEL liscense, would you guys install it for me if I were to purchase your server. Installing CPANEL would require a fresh OS install of linux, or bsd.
Ericwenlong 09-21-2002, 04:23 AM This is part of the information I have gotten from Internap during my conversation with them.
Bandwidth providers:
UUNet, Sprint, C&W, Genuity, AT&T, Qwest, Digex, Verio, and Global Crossing
I have no idea why transoptics includes cogent in their map. It could be a mistake.
If cogent is inside the trace, that means either the connection is not from Internap directly and solely, or they buy connection from internap directly but mix with other bandwidth providers, such as cogent, etc.

bulk buy power, if you've the capital to get like 500 servers with contract of getting like another 1000 servers and 2gige line, it'll be a lot cheaper than what you get for the 100mbps and 100 servers.
ACHOST 09-21-2002, 07:30 AM Not to bash, but how can UGC offer this so cheap while FluidHosting is very expensive while they are both on the same network...
How can hosting.com get 39.00 a month for 100 MB of hosting when people on this board get $0.25 ?????????
Hostany, do you think they would stay in the business for a long term (and profitable) with such pricing? I know that they probably get hundreds of orders this way, but can they still make profit while still paying their bills to Internap?
UCG Inc, what's your current bandwidth utilization (usage)? Do you have enough corporate clients now to subsidize your cheap pricing for us, WHT members? :D
chrisb 09-21-2002, 07:38 AM Maybe they hope to make a profit off of RAM, hoping most people will upgrade their RAM. RAM is pretty cheap these days, ya know. So, if they sell it at 5 times the price, that's money made.
Just a thought.
thomas830 09-21-2002, 08:13 AM do you remember when rackshack offered $99 servers, everyone though they won't be profitable... but they are.
do you remember first post about Cogent (http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?threadid=4543) ?
we don't know UGC's business model but they have to have big $$$, and to get them from VC they had to have good, solid business plan...
I emailed them yesterday and got pretty quick response.
hmm. they offer is really good, too bad prices for web hosting will go down again :bawling:
I wish them all the best

They should be able to, about a year go when people think Rackshack isn't profitable, they provided more servers at lower rate, they also signed contract with compaq, ensim, plesk etc... even thought they're backed by ev1.
You've to know, if they're backed by a bigger company, they'll be able to get everything even cheaper, althought I'm not sure who backed unitedcolo. (maybe intel, since they provide all the intel series servers, who knows ;) )

That is a mistake, the 9th provider should be Digex and NOT Cogent.. (I will get it fixed)
Keeping things simple, it seems its incoming Internap and majority outgoing Cogent (from my tests).....
Have a nice weekend.
JBIZ718 09-21-2002, 10:34 AM As I mententioned earlier this company will not be around long.
THey are having all inbound traffic for tracerts and what not being on nap. All out bound is on cogent. Cogent is not a part of internap and never will be.
After learning what is really behind this operation. My recommendation is to stay away, as whats going to happen is this company will be out of business sooner then you think.
DigitalXWeb 09-21-2002, 10:38 AM Originally posted by WebHozt
Well, who is the 9th provider?
It used to be Digex but they were dropped from Internap's model due to reliability issues so they only currently have 8 providers.
I can also definitely say that Cogent is not included in the Internap bandwidth. This is what JBiz was talking about and how they can do what they are doing for the price. Incoming traffic is coming through Internap and outgoing traffic is a mix with Cogent included. This is also why they do not offer a 100% uptime SLA because they are not using 100% Internap bandwidth and probably have a peering agreement with Cogent for outgoing traffic.
JBIZ718 09-21-2002, 10:41 AM Technically based on accounting logic.
This company looses money on every sale.
diederik 09-21-2002, 10:48 AM I pm'ed to ask when my server will be online :

Not quite correct. Some shown traceroutes did go through Internap. Not all their outgoing bandwith goes through cogent.
What they should have done is to mention that they have cogent in their network and that some data may be routed through cogent. What they are doing right now is to create an impression that all incoming/ougoing will be routed through internap, which is misleading.
But at $49/mo, what can you loose? It's still a good offer IMHO. :)
Onture 09-21-2002, 10:56 AM I agree, they should of mention Cogent as one of their peers. I pm them and asked whether they use Cogent or Internap for outgoing. They said Internap, not Internap + Cogent.
Still good deal though ;)

UCG Inc. 09-21-2002, 11:01 AM Hi JBIZ718,
It's rather presumptuous of you to assume the fate of a company when you have no information about its finance. People had the reservation about Southwest Airlines when they began to offer discounted fares, but the market cap of Southwest is now more than all the other major U.S. carriers combined.
If Southwest can offer one-way ticket from SFO to San Diego for just $49.00, then surely high quality dedicated hosting for $49.00 should not be a problem if you manage your operation carefully.
We do appreciate your skepticism though. It keeps us focused on the long term goal.
Also, if you go back and look at JBB post on page 11, not all outbound traffic is Cogent.

JDMundo 09-21-2002, 11:03 AM Whats your relationship with Handspring, FedEx and a few other big time enterprises? You use their logo in your Web site, are they clients of yours, investors?
Hostany Web 09-21-2002, 11:05 AM I'm not quite sure if they're using internap + cogent for outbound traffic. But what I can tell you is, they're providing high/quality traffic at incredible price.
On the other note, I've spoke to them and confirmed I'm allowed to sell cpanel license within their network as they're not offering it, so to anyone who wanted to get a Cpanel License on unitedcolo please contact me at ericlo@hostany.com
You can get the server directly from me at the same cost, but only if you're going to use CPanel license.
I don't know if I'm allowed to advertise on this thread, but unitedcolo has no problem with it, if mod feel it's not right, then feel free to remove this post.
Thanks!

I really cant understand all these questions when he is offering a server and 100GB of Internap b/w at 49$/mo!
Why dont you just sign up and see how good it is? :)
JBIZ718 09-21-2002, 11:13 AM I have info from a different source on this issue. I think its a good deal. I just do not recommend it. For many it may be ok.
It is very easy to manage traffic at router level. I am interested to know if Surepath is involved in this. And or mrtg graphs showing bandwidth charts.
It is shown that cogent is involved in this, which was not mentioned, but how are the carriers allocated. How much bandwidth is being pushed on nap.

I think it's a good deal :) Perhaps better than RS since RS does no have internap on it :) But again, they are misleading people by not telling people that cogent is part of their bandwith. Even when VS-Lap asked for it, they still did not mention cogent.
Now we will see some hosts (getting these deals) start to claim they have internap bandwith and offering their bandwith so cheaply. But I guess the truen internap host (with no "contamination" from cogent) will still be few, us inclluding :)
DigitalXWeb 09-21-2002, 11:13 AM Originally posted by UCG Inc.
Also, if you go back and look at JBB post on page 11, not all outbound traffic is Cogent.
In one post you say ingoing and outgoing is 100% Internap and in the next you say it includes Cogent, and they are not part of Internap's model nor will they probably ever be. So which is it?

If you look at the tracerts you will see this is not 100% Internap bandwidth so it is misleading people to think this is the case.

Well don't come here with ominous tones of watch out I have info. If you have information post it, If you don't then voice your opinion but at least admit it is nothing more than your opinion.
JBIZ718 09-21-2002, 11:34 AM Im not sure what your talking about. I have posted the info that I can post.
This is not my opinion. I mentioned about the cogent issue, and well its prooved that cogent is a part of this scheme now.
There are some things that I can not say.
Techark 09-21-2002, 11:41 AM OK we now know for $49.00 a month you get a server that has Internap mixed with cognet. But you keep implying you hsve more information like they are crooks or something, with your "there are some things I cannot say" little add on tag there. If you know something post it. If not it just look like sour grapes from a competitor, trying cast doubt on anothers offer.
Either speak up or get out of your competitors advertisment.
Techark 09-21-2002, 11:42 AM .
JBIZ718 09-21-2002, 11:47 AM This has nothing to do with the company I work for, and honestly what is your problem.
If this company said listen we are offering Internap inbound and internap + cogent outbound. And werent answering PMs like this post.

Re: Server
Dear VS-Lap,
We use Internap for both inbound / outbound traffic.
Just use caution on the issue. What I know should not make any difference at this point. They have already prooved that what they are stating is wrong.
In regards to me posting, some things by NDA's with people I can not post.
I have spoke enough, to me they will tell all the facts in due time.
clocker1996 09-21-2002, 11:50 AM i would get one
but i just have this gut feeling this company is going to be in major trouble a month or two now.
so i'm not going to bother
Techark 09-21-2002, 11:55 AM My problem is real simple if you have information that would help people not get burned then you post it. If you do not have the information you keep quite. It is one thing to call a competitor on a lie it is another thing to post inundo that you are not willing to back up. So you revealed the cognet line. What else do you have?
If nothing then say nothing if something then post it. It just looks cheap and tacky when you have Director of sales for Webreseller in your sig line to be making inundo comments that have no basis in fact that you are willing to post.

Little post hostmania jitters there Clocker? :stickout
JBIZ718 09-21-2002, 12:03 PM Keep in mind that my job at webreseller is one of my jobs. I also own my own consulting company, so this has nothing to do with them at all.
I think the cogent issue was a rather big issue, and based on fact.
There is something called a legal system, we have one in the US. There are some things that u can say, and some you can not. Look at a NDA.
I have revealed all the factual information that I can publicly disclose, and I have backed it up. So your points have no merit. All the points that I braught up have prooved themselves to be correct.
Since this is off track, I consider the issue closed, and hope the posts gets back on track.
UCG Inc. 09-21-2002, 12:07 PM Greetings,
While dedicated servers is an important part of our operations, the bulk of our revenues come from co-location customers and companies that buys bandwidth (only) from UCG. Therefore, UCG is not technically losing money on each server because we rather use the free cash flow from other units to increase capital expenditure rather than keeping it in the bank.
Some capital expenditures are treated as an asset which make your balance sheet looks great while too much cash on hand in the bank give you at best 5% ROI and it's also treated as taxable income. What would you do -- build up your company infrastructure or pay unnecesssary taxes?
Ericwenlong 09-21-2002, 12:10 PM I don't think they will run into financial problems because their bandwidth connection cost may not be as much as you think. Their internap connection may not be from Internap itself. It could be from a company who resells internap bandwidth by mixing them with cogent bandwidth. And the price, more or less at cogent pricing. So, for your info, this is still a good deal and I doubt they will run into financial problems.
But regarding their post on bulk purchase on internap bandwidth (2 Gig Es, etc) , I do not know if they purchase two full Gig Es, But as far as I know, you can always request gig E installation but min. CDR at 100 Mbps. If they are doing that, then, their min. cost is probably around 100 Mbps cogent price.;)
chuckt101 09-21-2002, 12:15 PM Why are people making a big issue out of Cogent? I agree he should have said Cogent is used, and posts about that are fine but the people making a big deal because it has some cogent is insane. Even if it is pure cogent it is still a good deal.
I'm quite impressed with the way they handle things thus far and I'm probably going to buy one after I get my CC thing worked out (hehe).
They seem very organized and as long as I get what they promise me each month, I won't be angry if their business fails in 4 months. That's just the way the business world works. Some of them succeed and some fail. If UGC tried hard and upheld their end of the terms during the time they were operating, then it's no money lost on my end. Maybe a little time "wasted" but I won't feel ripped off.
If you are here complaining about Cogent or casting doubt on this business's future, you should probably stop wasting yours and everyone else's time.
Thank you.

Agree with your point here, there's no way they're going out of business, maybe they're overselling the connection, but everyone knows that 90% of people won't ever do 100GB
Do a math, how many servers can fit in a 100Mbps or a gige connection? and how much money do they need to spend for bulk price of the connection?
Maybe that's not profitable on dedicated hosting, but UGC has stated "the bulk of our revenues come from co-location customers and companies that buys bandwidth (only) from UCG". And I truely believe they won't have any financial problems in near future, again a lot of people don't think rackshack can offer such cheap pricing and high bw offer, but they still have no problem at all and very very profitable. And so what happend next? everyone started to offer 300-500GB bandwidth which they were offering 50-100GB.
Time will tell and I'll support and getting servers/colo at UGC with no worry.

No. They are not. Only simple stuff like rebooting
It's been said they'll do OS Restore for you too, but to my knowledge UCG has not confirmed that.
Soulfish 09-21-2002, 01:12 PM I personaly don't see why people are worrying about Cogent being used. If you look at the traceroutes you'll see that cogent is very rarely used.
And when it is used its actualy quite a good route to take ;)
UCG Inc. 09-21-2002, 01:22 PM Hi Aragon,
UCG will do O/S restore for free.
MotleyFool 09-21-2002, 01:38 PM Much as my reason keeps telling me it is too good to be true [and keep being true for some time to come], I confess that I am very very tempted! :)
I think I am lucky that they dont accept paypal because I will just hit the send button NOW!
Besides, another reason I am not going for this now [not that any one is going to care ;) ] is that as of now I am having 4 servers to manage and I may not have time..
But I see what you mean clocker and the same thoughts are on every one's minds. :)

Yes Rackshack seemed doomed but they pulled through. But, that was because they were backed by EV1 and signed up over a 1000 people in a month! They had money to work with. Then they had some support issues to address - and space issues. We all know what happened during their hard times and growing pains. :)
I'll be interested to see if they can survive the first year with support issues. That is what ultimately makes a company successful, staying power! They'd better dig their trenches and be ready for the long support haul with a price like that. :) I'll sign up for the experience though (cheaper than a nice day at a golf course) - as soon as their site comes back up. Edit: (back up now! but site links ain't workin, ie network infrastructure) :)
homeiss 09-21-2002, 04:54 PM Hmm, they must be really busy. I sent an email and no reply yet. Everytime I have phoned I have gotten no answer. :bawling:

UCG Inc. 09-21-2002, 06:05 PM Greetings,
We're still here. Our finance team just placed another order for 80 more servers and these new Celeron boxes should be available on Wednesday or Thursday.
Also, we've never considered ourself a competitor from day one. Rather, our business model is based on the wholesaler concept. That's why our Celeron servers start at $49.00 per month. UCG could have easily priced it at $79 or $89 but since many of customers will be resellers, we want to make sure that their profit margin is sufficient enough to support their infrastructure.
It's a win-win situation for everyone.
