Nadav 09-19-2002, 06:37 PM Amazing :) http://slashdot.org/articles/02/09/19/157234.shtml?tid=146 mind21_98 09-19-2002, 06:42 PM I use AIM all the time but I find leet speak to be harder to type than regular written/spoken English. In any case they should know better than to use shortcuts like that. shaunewing 09-19-2002, 08:47 PM People who do that in assignments must be plain stupid. I never use "1337" speak or abbreviations as I find it quicker to just type the full word. If teachers gave severe penalties or handed back assignments without a grade because they were "illegible" then I'm sure students would start to write properly. --Shaun Shyne 09-19-2002, 08:51 PM The article talks about things like you "u" are "r" and not about typing in the 7337 language. mind21_98 09-19-2002, 08:56 PM I blame the shoddy American education system. Oh yeah, and laziness too. :( Shyne 09-19-2002, 08:57 PM Blame Counter Strike. That's where it all started from. mind21_98 09-19-2002, 09:11 PM Ban All Videogames! :stickout shaunewing 09-19-2002, 09:54 PM Originally posted by Shyne The article talks about things like you "u" are "r" and not about typing in the 7337 language. Hence my addition of "abbreviations" afterwards. But, if you look at the article title you'll notice it is "L33T Speak Invades Schools". But yes, it is laziness. People can't be bothered to type the full word so they'll use something like "U" or "UR" instead. --Shaun CritticAge 09-19-2002, 10:35 PM I used 'u' instead of 'you' for around 1 month. Since then, I type full words. It is just lazyness and it makes the writer/typer look like a little kid. :stickout interactive 09-20-2002, 12:25 AM lol ive caught myself using "lol" once...hmm imagine that ;)...other then that supprisingly i write way better than i type.... CritticAge 09-20-2002, 12:38 AM lol - it is more of an emotion....you would look stupid say "Lots of laughter" or "Laughing out Loud". AntiSpamHosts 09-20-2002, 12:58 AM I don't really write anything like this...but when I am walking around with a friend I am almost tempted to say "leet" (1337), but I catch myself. Reptilian Feline 09-20-2002, 09:04 AM  what does "leet", "1337", "7337" and "l33t" mean? mind21_98 09-20-2002, 09:25 AM Originally posted by reptilian-fe  what does "leet", "1337", "7337" and "l33t" mean? It's just another word for "neat" or "better": "I am l33ter than you" -> "I am better than you" alchiba 09-20-2002, 10:34 AM Originally posted by mind21_98 Oh yeah, and laziness too. :( If you're referring specifically to language, then you're correct. It is human nature to take shortcuts wherever possible. Throughout time, languages have gone through a "contraction" process so as to become easier to write, pronounce, etc. This is especially true with English, and the 'net is just an another example of that process. reseller 09-20-2002, 10:41 AM Originally posted by mind21_98 It's just another word for "neat" or "better": "I am l33ter than you" -> "I am better than you" I thought / was lead to believe it meant "elite" L EET 733T etc. So it wasn't pronounced as leet but as two words - el eet. Hmm I don't know. I'm too old to even try talk like that :) Kids today! |
