I'm trying to find a way to host a game online for other people to play, and I have heard I need a dedicated server to do so. I am not very familiar with how this works, so could someone please advise me on what to do? Thank you for the help!

i suggest you contacting a provider like limestone networks, plante, servepath etc to get a quote on the various server options available to host your website.
Once done, converge the specification to price and then select your host. Once odne, install your game application and bring it online.

Hi there,
Sandy's response is right on target. :) Essentially, you just need to order a dedicated server and then install your game server. What kind of operating system does your game require -- Windows, or Linux?

There are numerous providers that provide servers so depending on how many gaming slots and which game will decide how powerful a server and how much bandwidth you will use. Also what area will people be connecting from mostly as you will want good latency for gaming. Some providers have servers including game control panels or you can have one installed.

gameservers are best if run on linux - I run a few at home for friends and such and they work fine - if you don't have great dedicated server knowledge, I wouldn't recommend you skip to a dedicated server and get it - as Fiba said, there are providers that will sell you game servers priced by slots and tick rate
