View Full Version : nameservers and china
lanlan 09-19-2002, 03:45 AM I've been changing a few nameservers for the past few months because China kept blocking their access. At first I was using MyDomain and the ZoneEdit. They are free services and I understand that China might worry. But now, I'm using NamesDirect, a proper, well accepted domain service, and my site could still not be viewed in China. Does anybody have some experience with this problem? Any suggestions? Thanks a lot in advance.

GeorgeC 09-19-2002, 07:34 AM Perhaps China is blocking your domain directly? I don't see why however, as from what i understand only the big media sites such as Google or BBC News are banned in China.
cybotix 09-19-2002, 08:04 AM looking at ur domain records, altho ur using namesdirect's nameservers, ur ip still points at redirect.mydomain.com. if the entire mydomain.com is blocked, then ur site still won't work...
lanlan 09-19-2002, 02:37 PM what does it mean that my ip still points at redirect.mydomain.com? is it something that I can change or does namesdirect forced it? does anybody know any other free nameserver that I could try? I'm really frustrated because a large portion of my visitors come from China.... sigh....
sonic 09-19-2002, 03:57 PM well,
China government may have blocked your hosting company completely
you dont need to worry about this.
cause those chinese who want to visit your web site can still find a way to do so .... like proxy
lanlan 09-19-2002, 04:02 PM but I still want my site to work properly everywhere. is my only option moving my domain to a different provider??? anything else worthy to try?
cybotix 09-19-2002, 06:36 PM u can try everydns.net, but i'm not sure if they provide redirection service

Thats the problem with surfing behind the Great Firewall of China. Censorship isnt cool. If the Chinese government wants to block you, they will.
AntiSpamHosts 09-19-2002, 08:11 PM You can't fight China.
lanlan 09-20-2002, 12:32 AM It's not that China wants to block me, it's just that they've been blocking free dns servers that I happend to use. I don't really want to move my domain to another provider because that's such a hassle. So I'm trying to look for ways to get around... like finding dns servers (hopefully free) that China has not blocked. everydns.net sounds great, but I haven't figured out how to use it yet. Eventually, if nothing works, I'll just have to move my domain.....
Can you see the web page form the original URL in China?

We tried to traceroute from a China server and found the redirect.mydomain.com can't be reached.
I guess you may change to another domain company or use a commercial host.
Also you can consider to move your domain and website to my server. I'm running a hosting company in Hong Kong.
lanlan 09-20-2002, 02:54 AM Hi Tiga,
How reliable is your server? And are you sure that it would be able to be viewed from China if I transfer?
I'm running a web development company and this hosting company for 2.5 yrs. Sure it is reliable. My hosted websites can be viewed in China. You can have a test at a Beijing's VisualRoute Server

lanlan 09-20-2002, 04:03 AM Thank you, Tiga, I am considering tigahost, but do I have to get web hosting too if I transfer? (I only need dns) Now I have two more questions....
1) is zoneedit.com blocked by China for sure? (it was only my guess)
2) how do you find the IP address of a website?
Currently we don't have dns only service.
1) I don't know the redirect server address of zoneedit.com. If you find it you can go to http://www.linkwan.com/vr/ check it
2) You can use the command nslookup xxx.com to find it. Also you can check it at http://www.linkwan.com/vr/
