okay, you host guru's.. I have a few concerns and questions regarding hosting of subdomains..
a) Should any / all host providers offer subdomain hosting such as what www.mydomain.com does?
b) how do they offer such for free?
c) how do the se's feel about these subdomain submissions?
i have a few domains sitting at www.mydomain.com but i am not utilizing all of their features/perks.. i simply have them redirected to our core biz site..
but i wanna know.. how they can offer this svc. for free.. and i wanna know if this is a basic service that any host provider should or could offer?
Feedback appreciated..

From what I could see, mydomain.com provides domain name registration.
Not all web hosters provide subdomain hosting, some do and some don't. Usually if they do, it will fall as part of the space allocated by the web host.
As to how mydomain.com can provide such subdomain entry for free ? Well, as a domain hosting, there are a couple of lines in the DNS which needs to be entered to provide that support. As they are not web hosters themselves, they will not incur additional expenses as they do not generate almost neglieable amount of bandwidth and does not take up a lot of space to provide it. That is pretty much left to the web hosters.
Subdomains can be useful especially when you have a huge site and want to spread them around multiple servers without having to register different domain names for each of them.
And as to the question, should all host providers provide subdomain ? Well, it depends on them really. mydomain.com as mentioned earlier provides domain name registration and host providers offers web space and bandwidth so they are pretty much in a different league altogether. What mydomain.com can provide does not necessary be economical for web hosters.
What mydomain.com does is merely allow you to use their name servers to provide for subdomains but as to how that can actually be utilized on your web host would be up to them to determine. But I would supposed that mydomain merely do domain and subdomain forwarding.

Thankyou Edwin..
Still kinda unbelievable to me.. that myDomain can offer free parking/hosting in addition to multitudes of subdomains. Yes they do offer dom registration.. but they can't possibly be reg'ing that many names too offset the cost for hosting they freely give away?
if as you mention, they are not web hosters.. then how is it that i can have a domain.. such as:
www.TalkLarge.com sitting there.. and redirecting to another site of mine?
i am totally in the dark in regards to their services.. and primarily how it effects search engine submissions?
Again, thankyou for your professional feedback & time you spent looking into this post.

As for free parking, it merely means just using their Domain Name servers when you sign up for the domain name but have not found any use for it yet. They could do one of the two things, one just let you use their domain name servers (by letting you use their ns1 and ns2 server in the DNS Primary and Secondary entry) and does not do anything else OR they could add your entry up and throw you to a 'Under-construction' page. Both method does not quite take up much space, bandwidth or effort.
From what I could see, mydomain.com does not provide web hosting services. As you mentioned, they provide what you call domain forwarding services. This can be achieved in many ways, either when someone types http://www.talklarge.com it is redirected to a new web site with a different name or it can do the same thing but serve it using a frame so talklarge.com would appear as the URL but the contents from another site. This in itself suggest that mydomain.com does not incur much bandwidth or space in providing the service.
As for search engine submissions, I am not too sure about that for forwarded or redirected domain names. But of course, the better choice would be to have the domain name and site on the same server without the forwarding services.
By the way, if you go to your website at www.talklarge.com and do a View/Source , you would see that mydomain.com uses a frame method to forward to your actual web site while still retaining the domain name.
