Apparently any hosting company and/or website is at the mercy of the censors. At least in China...maybe I can make a deal to reroute WHT to me!
faculty 09-18-2002, 08:12 AM Yah! Wonder how much it would cost ;)
faculty 09-18-2002, 08:22 AM Wonder how much they would charge me to have any domain with "host" rerouted to my domain?
NOTE: This is a retoricle question - No offers from chinese officials thanks ;)
Its been back up since the 12th :)

WildCard 09-18-2002, 09:57 AM Yeah, last i heard Google was turned back on a few days after being censored, but Altavista is still down - as of when I read the article on Cnn.com a few days ago.
Theory was they were just testing to see how successful blocking a whole site to a country would be.
'Great FireWall of China'. :D Loved that line.

modihost 09-18-2002, 10:01 AM if you could get the entire google.com domain redirected to your web site - id imagin you would need AT least 5 load balanced/clustered servers to handle the traffic.
last i heard is that they have only 10,000+ servers...
WildCard 09-18-2002, 10:55 AM there was a post here a few weeks ago that said they had read they are up to 30,000+ servers now. ;-)
Yeah, ouch. Maybe that's why they turned off the redirection in china, overloaded the nice, censored search engine? Good theory, seems that the Chinese like google as much as everyone else does.

MDJ2000 09-18-2002, 01:09 PM What a shocker coming from a murderous, communist regime

seems that the Chinese like google as much as everyone else does. No doubt many people in China like Google for the same reasons the rest of us do, but the real value for many people there, and the reason access was blocked, is that they cache a copy of their indexed sites.
There are many sites related to news and culture that have long been inaccessible from within China. But of course, Google still indexes and caches those sites, so their content is still available as long as Google is.
Anyway, yeah... the production cycle at PC World means they're not much of a source for breaking news: Google is again accessible from within China. For now, at least.

For now, at least. iirc, the cache is still inaccessible, and if u search for "sensitive" keywords ur connection will be closed immediately, and access to google will be disabled for a few minutes...

Here's an article about the advanced sophistication of the approach the Chinese government is now taking: http://news.ft.com/servlet/ContentServer?pagename=FT.com/StoryFT/FullStory&c=StoryFT&cid=1031119326350&p=1012571727248
SiteTutor 09-18-2002, 08:23 PM This is the first time a search engine has been blocked in this way in China, but political unrest, ahead of a Party congress expected to see sweeping changes in the country's leadership is thought to have been the catalyst for this sudden stepping up of state control over online censorship.
In related news, UK Google users have also been experiencing problems when trying to access the site over the past few weeks.
