I was reading over FDC's un-metered bandwidth and stuff...I don't understand this whole "100mbit burstable to 100mbit" stuff, and what's the difference between their guaranteed and normal dedicated?

Also, what does this mean? I'm confusing myself here, and it's getting me frustrated, I thought I had this stuff down pat and now I'm confused..ahh!

Server is connected via 100Mbit port to our main switch. Bandwidth is shared among servers connected to one of our 100Mbit circuits. Being connected on the 100Mbit port gives the server great burtstability and much better bandwidth performance.

Thanks, sorry for the confusion....I'm confused though...:)

It means they have a total of 100mbit/s that their network can burst to theoretically.

Ok so when they offer something like 1mbps or 300GB actual, what does that mean?

And does that 100mbit mean that the transfer rate cannot excede 100mbit?

Yes theoretically if they constructed their network correctly and their uplink supports it thier network can burst up to 100mbit/s but no more. 1mbps or 300GB actual means if you used 1mbit/s 24/7 it would work out to 300GB actual usage per month. Which is a bit incorrect on the math there its more like 324GB or something along those lines. It is not really possible for you to personally burst to 100mbit/s since that is the max their circuit is and well they are bound to have other clients using bandwidth.

Ah ok that makes sense now.

So if it's a 1mbit line, then you can use up to 1mbps..Makes sense now.

Is FDC Cogent or something else like Multi-Homed or something?

Also, what would be better if I went with FDC, the guaranteed untmetered or the standard? Do they offer a control panel? (Prefer Plesk) I'm looking and not seeing a whole lot...

FDC is not yet multihomed, from what I know.

Whether you want the standard or guarantteed depends on your site. If your site is of any importance, go with the guaranttee, as I have heard some truly aweful performance for the standard plan. However, if all you are after is cheap transfer for some hobby site, then go with the standard, as the outages don't affect you that much.

You need to ask them if they supply any control panel (as this is a sales question, and webhostingtalk.com is not a sales forum), however, from what I remember, they would only install webmin for you for free.

I would also recommend a search on the forum archive to learn more about FDC server before you make a decision.

Hey thanks, I actually found the info on their site after I posted here...naturally...Anyways, I did their test download, and for being Cogent it wasn't bad at all...I got about 300kb/s...

I'll have to contact them about how much more Plesk would cost, or Cpanel. Thanks for the info! :)

You are most welcomed. :)

Make sure you do a search on them before you sign up - this is very important!

Of course. I'm not exactly sure who I want to go with right now. Both FDC and FastServers.net are looking good, so I'm not sure just yet...Who would you recommend?

I'm going to search through this forum and find reviews for a lot of people and see how it goes... :)

Based on the reviews and discussion I have seen over the last 3 months, I would strongly recommend fastservers.net. (and I would be cautious about going with fdcservers)

The world seems to be lacking good dedi providers now adays ;/

The only thing with FastServers.net is that you have to pay quarterly, and after that it's monthly. That means paying at LEAST $500 from the get-go. If I got a server, it would be for peronsal use, not business. So this is coming out of my own pocket and that gets kinda tough...

Well FWIW, both fastservers.net (64.71.174.31) and fdservers.com (66.220.28.164) are announced by AS 6939, which is Hurricane Electric. So from a network and facilities standpoint you're in good shape (never heard of an unhappy HE customer).

I guess you'd have to take a look at the support the two companies provide. Give 'em a call at 2AM and see which answers the phone. :)

Anybody recommend anybody else?

See the thing that's going to get me is the setup fees. I can't afford hefty setup fees since this is for personal use.

A small one is resonable for me, but not a large one. ($200 is cuttin it very close...)

I know I'm not going to find a lot for what I'm looking for, just kinda hoping there was something else out there to suit my needs :)
