Since I'm in the exploring stage of starting a reseller,
what are the advantages and disadvantages of using a
turnkey site?
I'm sure too much competetion will make it hard for your
site to even rank competitively, so it would seem that a
custom site would be the best way to go.
However, customization is not easy unless you are an
expert in HTML, PHP or CSS.
Can anyone give some helpful tips for the newbies?
Thanks.

I don't agree that customization of a website is difficult anymore because so many free templates are available on the Internet and even if you don't know how to customize programming codes yourself, there are countless website designers out there who can churn the things out for a few hundred dollars and you can easily get something that looks good.
High quality content in a website is not at all easy to produce and most of the website designers are not experts when it comes to quality content production. If a website is just for fun, the content doesn't matter but if the intent of a website is to make money, content means everything and form is much less important.
Anybody who is serious about making money on the Internet with a new website is well advised to find the best writer they can find and don't quibble about writer's pay rates. Pay your writer well and treat your writer with respect because your writer can be the single most crucial key to the financial success of your new website.
