View Full Version : one person company
delpino 09-17-2002, 05:23 PM i am thinking of becoming a reseller.. just wondering if its advisable to do that as a "one person company". what should i do when i go on vacation for example? are there many companies out there which are reseller who hides that fact? how much percent of those web host out there are not "real" hosts?
appletreats 09-17-2002, 05:27 PM You should try to find at least one other person to help you. What if you get sick, family emergency, vacation, etc. Who will handle support, billing, new signups, and sales questions?
I would definately advise against starting a host, even a reseller host, with only one person handling everything.
delpino 09-17-2002, 05:29 PM maybe there is somebody here, who would like to cooperate with me, who has a webhost company or would like to found one
<<MOD NOTE: They should contact you directly and not post on the forum>>
appletreats 09-17-2002, 05:32 PM Maybe. (http://www.webhostingtalk.com/forumdisplay.php?forumid=33)
tazd9t9 09-17-2002, 06:25 PM Dont do it, i'm 18 a one person company and was informed by my doc this morning that i have high blood pressure, not good at any age but especially not at 18
phpcoder 09-17-2002, 06:29 PM Post an offer in the Related Offers and Requests forum... I am sure you will find a person that would like to do something with you :D
Meaning start or let you join a company.
Paul-UKWSD 09-17-2002, 06:33 PM It's much better to start the company as a partnership, you can then share the work load between the two of you and you can have holidays without dashing to cybercafes every 30 minutes ;)
Alan - Vox 09-17-2002, 07:05 PM yeah, but a lot of partnerships fail because the partners fall out.

That is so true. 5 years ago I was in a partnership which went wrong. Like they say, never go into business with friends or family.
chrisb 09-18-2002, 05:18 AM Pick up a woman at your local bar, and ask her if she'd be willing to "take it out in trade" for tech support. ...just a thought :)
as hostworkz.com said, never go into business with friends and family...but also,
i wouldnt reocmmend going into buisness with a total stranger either.
And if i did, i sure would be carefull to get papers on everything to keep me safe!
dustinto 09-24-2002, 04:52 PM Hello,
If you are intrest in getting a reseller I recommend it even if you are only going to be working with yourself. It is not hard to set-up accounts, and you might want to get a laptop if you don't have one so you can set-up accounts on your vacation...in your hotel room or a cyber cafe.
Also, you dont have to do this every 30 minutes...just put a notice on your web site that the set-up service may be delayed! It is very simple...also don't forget to set-up all your emails with auto-response messages!
You will only need to set-up the accounts in the mourning and at night and if you want to around noon! Trust me this is not hard and I strongly incourage you to do this...It can provide a good income for you and you can always hire somepeople as you get bigger.
About getting sick...that will not keep you away from the computer, but if you are worried about that simplly train someone on how to do it and ask if they would take over in a case like that....also offer a commission on each plan he sets up (like the set-up fee if you have one).
I hope this helps...

chrisb 09-24-2002, 04:57 PM Janus, you site loads awfully slow, and you have way too many logos on your page. Just my honest opinion.
Also, if someone is in the hospital, it'd be very hard to impossible to work your hosting company, especially if both arms were in traction.
dustinto 09-24-2002, 05:54 PM Chris,
My beta site is on an old server that yes does load slow. We are setting up new faster servers now for the grand opening of Janus Hosting. If you were to train someone on how to set up accounts on the reseller account which is easy. That person could just take over while your arms were broken....or if you had voice command you could do it from your hospital bed!
Also, I don't have too many logos....I just want visitors to know that we use brand names and a few of the top names we use.
DayGlo 09-24-2002, 07:35 PM Be careful with parnters, i am working on my second hosting company now because i ended up doing all the work for the first one. He was and still is my friend but it's hard to be dedicated when you feel like your dragging someone along for the ride.
I choose another friend to be the partner in my new company this time but we both have different skills (unlike my last partnership). Also, he lives quite far from me so he can focus on getting local customers in his area, and i can focus on my area while we both focus on the web in general.
I am very confident that everything will work ok but if it doesn't, oh well. Now i know that i can get a company off the ground and running without needing a partner.

GoldenWeb 09-25-2002, 03:01 AM Are PC's even allowed in hospitals (I'm talking about patients allowed to bring one in not the normal hospital ones) and could you get a connection?

dustinto 09-25-2002, 06:29 AM I am pretty sure they don't care if you bring a laptop to the hospital....you will just have to limit you medication intake..lol
