View Full Version : I know why Google Adwords doesn't seem to work now
lexington 01-13-2009, 02:05 PM I created a webpage that only Google Adwords points to, and also added the $_SERVER var to get the referrer so I can see how people are coming across my site. I see a lot of cases where there are about 10 clicks from the same ad with similar IPs. I bet this is all one person clicking on his own ads on his site and I am paying for it. That explains why I get so many clicks and visits but no sales.
Joseph_M 01-13-2009, 04:26 PM It could be! Why not ask Google to investigate?
lexington 01-13-2009, 04:27 PM I have already :) Plus you cannot ban the IP using the Adwords IP exclusion tool since only the first three digits in the IP are the same and the other digits keep changing and Google's tool will not allow banning of only 3 digits.
JRSEOMarketing 01-13-2009, 04:58 PM Google investigating click-fraud is a big joke. We receive no less than 30% click fraud each month and always submit the 3rd party results to Google. They "investigate" then gives us usually $15.00 - $25.00 credit.
We estimate we get shafted for at least $13,000 in click fraud with Adwords. And forget the Content Network... ughh.
I'm just very happy our company did not go into that settled class-action law suit. I told EVERYONE to not join, as another HUGE one will be coming along closely. Watch the news ;)
Mekhu 01-13-2009, 05:22 PM Click fraud is a part of life and I can say first hand it's beyond easy to fool. While I assure you I haven't done it in years we used to collect a couple hundred a day and I'm sure 50% of that was faked clicks... hey, we were young.
Being an advertiser now, I know how frustrating fraud clicks can be. If you're concerned with fraudulent clicks, turn off the content network in your adwords account settings.
nuthin 01-14-2009, 12:09 AM Have you disabled the content network? Also disable the search network, so your ads will only appear on Google. Edit: sorry didn't see your post above PinkFloyd/Mekhu. :) The search network is dodgy too. A few dodgy search partners Google has/have had in the past.
Aussie Bob 01-14-2009, 01:17 AM Google would probably go broke if it wasn't for click fraud. :D
Juuuuust kidding. :P
Mxhub 01-14-2009, 01:24 AM Probably follow what PinkFloydWS & nuthin advise.. turn off the content network. Hopefully, we can see some positive result. :)

Outlaw Web Master 01-14-2009, 03:01 AM hmmm
google adwords...I used it for 3 months and got little business so dumped it.
there used to be a scam in conjunction with adsense.
if you had a spare pc in the house, then it was set up using a macro and automatic IP changer, where basically the macro opened the browser with the homepage set to your site with adsense banners on it, then it clicked an ad, closed the browser, then the ip changed automatically and the process ran over and over again.
apparently a few peeps made decent money.
dunno if folks still do it that way. :D
just for the record I never used it and only take clean money.

citricsquid 01-14-2009, 04:23 AM google ads are only for people wanting quick money. A serious business shouldn't ever use it, I've clicked them legitimately; interested in the content of the adverts only a few times at most. I know of people who make $200 a month from click fraud (Clicking their own) and I'm sure most people do; don't use it.
nuthin 01-14-2009, 04:35 AM Even though where getting off topic, why do you say Google Adsense is only for people wanting quick money?
I don't want quick money from Google Adsense. It's a full time job for me building up different streams of revenue for my own network of web sites and Google Adsense is by far the one that pays my bills and mortgage.
I have been a publisher since Feb, 2004 and have delivered literally millions of quality visitors to Adwords advertisers on the content network during that time, through my quality web sites that generate quality/targeted visitors.
So don't pigeon hole an entire program, due to only a small percentage of people who abuse it.
I do admit that there probably is alot of fraud for Adwords customers in the content network, unfortunately.. this is why I would say if you do Adwords turn off the content/search networks if you think your not converting anything.
MikeDVB 01-14-2009, 08:46 AM I'd say there's probably a larger portion of users that abuse the system than you would think nuthin. Of course I'm speculating, but in all of my dealings with adwords I've always seen a high rate of click fraud.

Lets remember that majority of fraudsters are kids and they get banned quick. Something about a 50% CTR for a week straight that just screams scam :D
We noticed better conversion results with the content network ON compared to when it was off so obviously fraud doesn't run the entire system.
I was just merely stating that it goes on and you can save yourself some hassle by changing some preferences.

Mike - Limestone 01-14-2009, 05:17 PM Does Google Adwords allow you to check specific IPs to see if those clicks were credited back as click-fraud? e.g. If you suspect that 69.29.29.10 was fraud, but can run that through a Google Adwords checker to see if you were charged for that potentially fraudulent click?
