View Full Version : Could use some help - Big File Uploads

Before I post again in "Hosting Requests" I could use some advise from a few of the hosting providers in this forum.

I need to download and upload CAD files. They range in size from 1.5MB to 37MB. Typically 1MB to 10MB. Then, once every week or two I get one of the 20MB to 37MB files.

Providing me with private FTP accounts for my users doesn't seem to be too much of a problem for many or you. (Except for speed. Right now I'm uploading to a Mercury server and getting 35KBPS. Downloading is better @ 500KBPS to 750KBPS).

However, many of my customers are not techically oriented and FTP is way over their heads. They want to push a button and send me files. OK. We can do that. Right now I have a CGI based upload page. It works but it's slow.

I would prefer ASP. I have been told if I use an upload component like ASPupload, it would be much faster. Also, I could use PHP. But I need to modify the PHP.ini file to make large uploads work.

All that being said, I have to find a host where I can get the speed and the software to make all this work.

Any suggestions as to what I might do in terms of tradeoffs to be able to find a host.

Thanks for any help.

A wealth of scirpts for file management can be found here:

and here:

and here is ASP:

Thanks for the response. However, scripts are not the problem. I have scripts. I need a host where I can make the scripts work with big file uploads. My problem is finding the host!

I have placed two requests in the requests area. Not a lot of responses from hosts that could actually accomodate the large uploads. So, my thinking is that maybe I'm not asking the right questions or, my type of need is so non-typical that there are very few hosts that feel they make money on it.

Or, the host I am looking for is not lurking the hallways at WHT.

Either way, if I could be pointed in the right direction, that would be a big help.

I think you will find your end solution in your own Dedicated Server. There comes a time that a sites requirements , resources, and usage superseed a Virtual Account. Yours haveing 2 or possibly 3 of those will make it very hard to find a Host wanting to share resources allow access to php.ini or even modify his default settings .

My suggestion is pointing you in the direction of your own dedicated server so you can edit and use as you wish without affecting any other sites on the same server.

that's a sweet speed of 750k-bytes, not many host will offer you that.

You have to understand that thier are host ( like myself ) that practive the art of server caching so that we can bang out 2 to 3 mbit's for our clients web sites. but when you get to ftp, that's another story. your eating cpu and drive cpu like crazy.

Look for a host that does not have a throttle on the cpu or on the upload or d-load, it's commonly done by many host to prevent going into the next pricing range when you buy bandwidth by the burstable m-bit.

if you got the money, go to a host that has file servers for audio and visual media. those servers are tuned differently than just the web request servers ( media file servers require, super fast I/O and are tuned to dump many m-bits per second )

if need a refference for a dedicated server that is tuned towards your specific need I think I know of one datacenter that has a few servers along those lines. Not cheap but the untilmate goal is to save you alot of time both on the upload and download.

Also you might want to chech your modem. that could be the cause of your entire problem. I have come to the understanding that certain cable modem providers have throttles on thier pipes. a simple phone call to them might give you the break you are looking for.

OK. That's the kind of advise I am looking for. Here's the next hurdle. I just left Verio with my own VPS. (Way to expensive for what you get). So, I can handle domain servers, HTaccess PHP, some scripting, setting up new accounts, command line telnet, etc. (I even had to install my own PHP. My head was spinning after that one).

Lesson learned: I am not a sys admin nor do I want to be. On the other hand, I cannot afford a managed server.

Is there a product or service available for dedicated that could leverage my current skills but leave the nuts and bolts to someone else? How about VPS?

BTW, Thank you Dimension8 and ADEhost! Your comments are appreciated.

(re: modem problem - I get the same result via different locations and providers.)
