I recently made the move from 28.8 dialup to a cable connection. An astounding difference, thats for sure. literally 100x faster.

Just out of curiosity, how much would a cable or DSL connection cost in other parts of the world (I'm in canada) and what speeds can you get?

I paid $255 canadian "money" and got 8 months (pay for 6, get 2 free) and a cable modem, as well as installation. I get around 400 k/s max.

How do those prices compare with other locations? (29.95/month if you're a student like me, otherwise 39.95/month.

I found that most of those download meter places werent very accurate. I just go by how fast i can download from a download site.

Right now I'm paying about $50 a month I'm pretty sure, just pay bills, don't even read em anymore :)

I have ROGERS CABLE INTERNET (&^%$ING SUCKS). They've just moved forward and capped my upstream to 25kb/s which is just not gonna work for me.

www.magma.ca - my new connection gets setup on Wednesday!

3 meg service! Looking at about $90 a month.

I have a 15 gig download/upload limit per month with unmetered during 12am and 7am I think!

Your upload is quicker than your download? Odd...

Pretty good pricing though :o

I pay $95 a month for Comcast Professional Cable Modem Service.

With the professional plan you get 5 IP address's, and 3.5 mps download and 384kbs upload. However actual speeds are much much slower.

The regular comcast plan is $40, for 1 ip address, and 1.5 mps download, 128 kbs upload. $5 more for modem rental

According to nyc.speakeasy.net, I get the following speed:

2002-09-17 12:36:34 EST: 8865 / 945
Your download speed : 8865977 bps, or 8865 kbps.
A 1082.2 KB/sec transfer rate.
Your upload speed : 945626 bps, or 945 kbps.
Seems like broadband .. above the 1mbit barrier!

I pay £22.99, which is $35 (ish) - I'm in Britain as well, and that's for a 512k down, 256k up connection. You buy the hardware seperately - only £78 ($100) for a router/modem/firewall.

Until recently Britain was one of the most expensive places to get broadband, but I'm pleased that the price is falling - now we need to lower the prices for fatter pipes (T1s etcs. are still much more expensive :( ).

Mcf, what provider do you use? I'm with Pipex.

ahh yes, i signed up for pipex for my grandad, but my dad wanted to go with AOL, ebcause of there good support..plus they had a special on, and the modem was only 25 pound :)

NYC.speakeasy

2002-09-18 00:48:20 EST: 3055 / 335
Your download speed : 3055726 bps, or 3055 kbps.
A 373 KB/sec transfer rate.
Your upload speed : 335195 bps, or 335 kbps.
Seems like broadband .. above the 1mbit barrier!

Not bad actually, thought it would be much worse.

Aaah the joys of dialup:
2002-09-18 03:44:41 EST: 36 / 16
Your download speed : 36689 bps, or 36 kbps.
A 4.4 KB/sec transfer rate.
Your upload speed : 16242 bps, or 16 kbps.
Your connection hardly qualified as broadband, at least in that test

Hopefully soon (1-2 weeks) I'll be getting ADSL:

512/128 with 3gb peak download (unmetered from 12am - 7am) for AU$79.95 month. After that 3gb your speed is reduced to 56/56 (with the exception of local mirror sites: tucows, etc).
