View Full Version : DotNetPanel thoughts

HivelocityGM

I wanted to get the thoughts of anyone who has used Dotnetpanel.
1. Is it a worthwhile control panel?
2. Any features it has that makes it superior to other Windows cps like Plesk or HostingController?
3. Any pros or cons of the product?
4. Is this a cp you would like to see more hosting providers carry?
Thanks in advance for your input.

We are using it in VI.net - and it is pretty sleak. We are currently beta testing cpanel's new windows CP though and that looks like a winner.

DotNetPanel is an excellent panel. I think that cPanel for Windows may outshine it, but of course DNP is available right now for Windows - cPanel isn't.

DotNetPanel has introduced quite a few features such as Exchange hosting, Sharepoint services etc but IMHO it has yet to mature its services to match panels like Hosting Controller which have been in the market for a while.

Development is quite slow with DNP these days.
I have been with them since the beginning and am disappointed in that regard.
I'm looking at Hosting Controller, or even MachSol.

Just considering to start using this panel myself. The licensing isnt out of this world either. So i think its a great solution for VPS providers because getting a reseller account seems to be a pain.
On another note am I missing something with getting a plesk reseller account because from my initial research it appeared to have a $1,000 minimum to get started.

We are using the Dotnet panel it seems to be faster than plesk, have nice features and also having the required functions.
It should be promoted by the hosting companies

Question though, since I have heard from a lot of hosts here about the panel and that it is nice for them. Is it a step down from plesk for the end user? I know that sometimes users tend to get tied to these bulky control panels and thus think that all others are inferior.
Curious as to what the user response is on this panel.

Dotnet panel is more than plesk in many features, see their documentation for a comparison of this two panels

I use DotNetPanel and manage about a dozen servers with it. It has its pluses and minuses, but overall I love it.
Minuses:
- Updating a dozen servers is annoying. All they need is a better update utility. It doesn't do up-to-date upgrades, you need to install each individual update.
- With SmarterMail, it creates user accounts for aliases and sets forwardings, instead of just creating SmarterMail aliases. This results in double my SmarterMail license usage for users.
- I don't like how it creates domains in DNS for sites on a hostname other than www/plain domain name. It bloats DNS.
Pros:
- It is pretty quick and speedy. I really despise Helm. I don't know if they've gotten better (been ~2yrs), but when Helm's much touted .NET version came out, I was gravely disappointed.
- Supports a wide variety if platforms.
- Pricing is attractive.
- Since it is .NET and I'm a .NET developer, I've easily tweaked their system to my will in some regards. I did a custom SQL provider to set DB owners, did a custom SmarterStats provider to work better with how I had logs managed, and a custom DNS provider for Nettica to apply templates to new domains. Also going to do one to work around the SmarterMail annoyance with aliases.
Development may have slowed on DNP, though I don't see that as an issue. They just had some big releases with their Hyper-V management stuff, and they probably have even more larger ideas in the work. Velocity shouldn't be measured by frequently of releases, but the size of releases, and I think they've been pretty good.

I definitely agree with this, it may be worth also noting that Dotnetpanel may be the best choice at this point for quite some time as Windows CPs has been their only focus. Parallels develops products for both OS and it'll be some time before the bugs are ironed out of cPanels new offering (once it is actually released).

Dotnet panel is the best panel currently available but the support of them should be bit better to promote it to higher levels

We like DotNetPanel a lot. DotNetPanel development may seem slow to some people lately, this is because they were spending all their efforts on their new VPS portion to the control panel that allows quick provisioning of VPS's. This is an excellent feature. I'm sure we'll see more updates for the CP itself in the following months, they are very much active on it.

You can check with Rubal - Rubal [@] Rubal [.] Net
He is an authorized DNP license reseller and can get you good amount of discount on retail prices.
Thanks,
