Well I don't know how to go about recovery of the MBR. I do know that "fdisk /mbr" will write a new one.

Get a boot disk with cd rom support assuming this is a windows box, put your OS cd in and cd d: (or whatever your cd designation is) then type setup.exe
this will re-install windows, but leave all of the files on the system.

This is a dos utility that mite help, or try this:

Restoring the Master Boot Record

-Boot up with your Windows 95/98 boot disk. When you reach the A:> prompt type "fdisk /mbr" (without quotations) and then press enter. When the process is complete you will be returned to the A:> prompt. Then proceed with the sys of C: Drive.

Using the SYS Command on the C: drive will restore the operating system boot record, which includes transferring system files.

-Type "sys c:" (without quotations) and press the "enter" key. After "system transferred" message appears, reboot.
