View Full Version : So where is edge-host????
merletweb 09-16-2002, 11:53 AM Been waiting for several hours now and no connetion with my account nor with edge-host.com.
The edge-host guys monitor this board, where are they now? Please let us know what's going on and how long this downtime will last. We're losing money here....
edge-host is down again i just confirmed it with a friend who is registerred with them.
I think they had some problems since yesterday/earlier today. Check the threads to see further information.
Layzee 09-16-2002, 11:58 AM Downtime reported by EasyMonitor -> 14 hours.... *sigh*

CW WTF? 09-16-2002, 12:52 PM Yes, this is all very frustrating... Also, usually one of the 2 guys is on AIM. At least on there with an away message. Neither of them are on now.
Also, I talked to Alec a few days ago, he said that HE is 14, but he isn't the CEO. The CEO is much older. Alec is just tech support and a programmer. Just to clear some rumors up.
registered 09-16-2002, 12:52 PM Get out while your young
I spent a month getting liked to the top sites on the net
Dos attack server is down there goes all my links
Then when i check my site they are 404ing my traffic to there site
merletweb 09-16-2002, 01:03 PM It would be nice if we could get our files back if they have no plans on returning.
They have a phone number but you always get an answering machine.
A note here explaining what's going on would be very nice.
ryan21 09-16-2002, 02:38 PM Any one able to hold of any edge-host staff? They used to be online everyday in icq but now seem like they disappear after the whole server went down. Soon my site will be down for 24hr , I can't imagine the number of visitors and the revenue I am losing.
I hope that edge-host staff can reply in this forum and tell us what is wrong instead of hiding.
merletweb 09-16-2002, 02:51 PM And to think I changed from cyberwings.com... Do I have a big red "Stupid" on my forehead???
I'm trusting that edge-host is having a temp problem and that they will be back on-line soon.
phpcoder 09-16-2002, 03:06 PM Ok, let me just try to explain all of the problems that we are having, and give you an updated status on the server (amd3).
Originally the problems were thought to be a lagging network and a problem with the server being able to reboot. After rebooting the server a few times, it would come back online for a few hours... and then crash again. During those uptime hours we would monitor the server to see what the hell was going on. Nothing un-normal seemed to be happening.
Last night I lost patience with everything and decided that I would take matters into my own hands. I spoke with the datacenter, and they rebooted the server. It fixed the problems.
However when I woke up this morning I found out that the server was down again. Another reboot and it was back online.
When I got home a few hours later I found that the server was offline AGAIN. I quickly phoned the datacenter and talk to their support team. They are looking into it as we speak.
The problems are not with the network, nor with ISP's. It seems as if some hardware (*thinking NIC card*) have gone bad. Therefore all hardware is going to be replaced now with new hardware to fix any the problems that we have been having with the server.
Edge-Host is not taking your money and leaving the business. We plan to be in the picture for a long period of time. There are NO financial problems, and we are not in debt.
Edge-Host.com was hosted on a Rackshack server. However the server got hacked (we then get an email from them (RS) 2 days later about a possible security hole in the system... just a tad late) and the 2 backup nameservers didn't work.
Therefore Edge-Host had to be put on AMD3, hence the reason that it is down. We just got 2 brand new servers online and will begin to transfer/add clients to the servers tonight.
We apologize for all of the problems and loss in business that this is causing you and your clients. We are working on getting all things restored and back to normal. All clients will be compensated for their losses, and refunds will be available to all that want them. No data has been lost, and no data will be lost at any point in time.
I urge all clients to email me (alec@totalfreelance.com) if they have any questions or need something. Feel free to PM me as well.
Again. We are very sorry and are working as hard as we can to fix the problems. I will keep all users updated as time goes by.
Thanks,
Alec
merletweb 09-16-2002, 03:12 PM Great! You're alive!!!
One thing you failed to tell us, when will we all be back and running again??
Thanks for you update! I appreciate it!
phpcoder 09-16-2002, 03:15 PM Well the server is back online now... It should be back to normal now.
However I will still keep everybody updated as I get word from the DC about what was/is going on.
We should be thanking you for staying with us!
-Alec
ryan21 09-16-2002, 03:27 PM I guess it is back to normal now :) , my site is back online now.
WildCard 09-16-2002, 03:32 PM Good work PHPCoder. Honesty and honorability is nice to see.

phpcoder 09-16-2002, 03:35 PM Thanks WildCard... its the least I can do, and we owe it to our clients (for sticking with us).
Please remember to report any problems to me via email, im, pm, forums or helpdesk: http://support.edge-host.com.
Thanks again!
merletweb 09-16-2002, 03:54 PM Great to be back on-line. Thanks for the great news!!!

*cough* server monitoring. I hope you weren't aware the server was down only when you "woke up"

Home from where? Home from the edge-host.com commercial office? Or home from somewhere else maybe??

I hope it all works out for you and your clients. :)

Hmmm I asked for a refund and you said no, flat out. I hope you aren't providing this kind of "compensation" with all your clients.
I agree about the *cough* server monitoring :P
Maybe home from a hard day of working in the Wal-Mart computers section? :D Wait Wal-Mart doesn't even have computers, okay, gaming section

Was any important customer information leaked, passwords, personal information, otherwise? Obviously I am not asking you to disclose this here, but have you informed your customers? What are you doing to ensure the same thing does not happen on your other systems?

They don't??!! Kind of funny. All across America speak of these "super" Walmarts that have grocery stores built into them and are open 24-hours, but according to you don't sell computers. Here in Northern California I personally have never seen a "super" Walmart but ours do in fact sell computers :stickout

Yes, we are working to make sure this wont happen again. I am using information that we given to me from the CEO. We got an email from Rackshack saying something about 20+ servers being part of a ddos attack and a possible security hole....
We got this email 2 days after the server crashed :(

Shame they dont read suport tickets
phpcoder 09-17-2002, 06:33 AM Aussie Bob, thanks for the kind words.... however it is not my job to moniter the servers. Everything I have been doing is more than I have been asked to do.
Techark 09-17-2002, 06:52 AM Alec
Why are you having to monitor the servers? Where is the CEO and support techs in all this?
I have another question?? Didn't you guys also advertise dedicated servers, if you are hosting in RachShack do you have your own servers? Are you reselling for someone else? If so where is the data center?
And last but not least how old is Kelsey the CEO the one you say is much older than you?
merletweb 09-17-2002, 01:38 PM Looks like edge-host is down again....
merletweb 09-17-2002, 02:07 PM Talk to me phpcoder!!! Que Pasa???
Tazzman 09-17-2002, 02:08 PM I'd just like to thank God for edge-host.com going down last week. I was going to sign up for a dedicated server when their site went down (thus I couldn't order it) and that made me then take up an offer from dragon.com for a second dedicated server in 56 Marietta. Thanks to this I'm missing out on all the fun, and judging by the way this is beeing handled, I can say: LORD, I BELIEVE !!!
[Terminate rant mode]
phpcoder 09-17-2002, 02:33 PM Alright,
I am getting pissed of with Dragon now since the server keeps crashing and they are having problems figuring out what is going on. They think it might be the hardware... or power supply... etc.
The server "freezes" and wont respond to anything. I just had them reboot it and it is now back online.
Again, I appologize for the problems and will make sure that all clients are compensated for the loss. Edge-Host WILL get to the bottom of this and everything will be fixed shortly.
Tazzman 09-17-2002, 02:36 PM I am getting pissed of with Dragon now since the server keeps crashing and they are having problems figuring out what is going on.I don't recall you mentioning anything about Dragon Networks in your previous posts. Now you've got me confused...
Nevermind, just did a traceroute and it would seem edge-host.com is hosted on a dragon server. Weird that you're having problems with them. They've always been good to me.
BTW, not trying to attack Edge-host in any way. I'm sure it's just teething problems with a new company and that you'll get it all sorted in time.

That was our first ever server at RS, the server was attacked... and then we got notified a few days later about a possible security hole.
Our servers are custom built, and are in a suite at eXChange Colo in California.
Kelsey has been out of college for quite a few years. If you want to talk to him about his age then do so. He isn't TimPD ;)
Again, I appologize on behalf of Edge-Host.

AMD3 is at Global Compass, with Dragon Networks. All of our new servers and client servers are at eXchange Colo.
phpcoder 09-17-2002, 02:40 PM As I said in a previous post somewhere:
Edge-Host was on the RS server, but when it crashed the secondary nameservers didn't work for some reason. Therefore we had to quickly put it on AMD3.
Again, I think by tonight all of these problems will be resolved :)
mainarea 09-17-2002, 03:33 PM Alec,
New servers will be at eXchangeColo? Any IP to trace for the new DC?
- Matt
Hi Alec,
If I may suggest, please check the CPU as well. The hard drive maybe corrupted, but there could be several reasons why it went bad/corrupted.
If the CPU is too hot, it maybe unstable when it reaches the peak load, which may cause the server to crash and therefore, may contribute to the corruption of the harddisk.
Wishing you all the best :)
