View Full Version : How does everyone pay?
Greetings all,
Just wondering what is the most common way for paying a webhost monthly and paying for a domain registration.
Unfortunately i dont like the idea of paying with a credit card and some services dont allow wire transfer, even cheques.
I was suggested that i open another bank account to obtain a sort of 'prepaid credit card' which i thought would be most ideal in this situation.
Then again there is also paypal, but things can go wrong as seen with paysystems.com (i think :) )
What do you guys think?
Share with us your means of payments so we can broaden our ideas :D
Thanks.
I forgot to mention, not only most common way, but the safest less risky way of payment. :)
Geek3 09-16-2002, 11:57 AM most carriers will accept PayPal (or most that i know) and I know PayPal supports eCheque (not sure if they still do).. i would check it out. I know that we're about to start accepting checks via authnet's echeque service, however, try PayPal and see.. ask your desired host if they accept paypal (and im sure they'll work with you!) :D
Akash 09-16-2002, 12:07 PM the most common way is credit card.....
the safeset way would be a check (or e check) or direct wire transfer, but most hosts won't allow it.
to get around this, tie your paypal account to your checking account and you can go that route...
but just curious, why are you uneasy about paying with a credit card?
If i pay with a credit card and something goes wrong (an extra debit of some sort) or for the worst affect my account and i could lose everything in it. (just to point the general idea)
And i know there are some people out there who do not own a credit card, I myself am still studying and i understand that credit cards have a debit in the end of the year around 60$.
Im sure others have their reasons aswell :)

You're protected when using your credit card online (and indeed anywhere). It's called a chargeback.
allera 09-16-2002, 05:40 PM I think a credit card is the most common and safest way. What I think you're talking about is a debit card where the money comes right out of your bank account. You want to use a _credit_ card. That way, if the merchant charges something they shouldn't, _you_ aren't out any money. You dispute the charge and the credit card company will freeze that charge so you aren't incurred any interest (and often they increase your spending limit to make up for the frozen charge so you still have the amount available) until the dispute is settled. If it went in your favor (usually does), it'll be as if nothing happened.
Take the other side: a check. The merchant deposits that right away and is deducted from your bank account. What happens if five days later the merchant providing the service doesn't live up to their promises? You're out the cash and you likely won't be able to get it back without legal (read: expensive) help.
If we're talking about a small amount of money, checks are fine. If we're talking about a not-so-small amount of money, I'd use a credit card. I'm protected that way. I'm not protected with a check/cash/money order/wire transfer/whatever.
Hope that helps!
ChrisTech 09-17-2002, 01:13 AM Paypal works great for me. I set up a 2nd checking account with x amount of money in it. That and some people don't have/like credit cards.
I have a debit card for my checking account, with overdraft ect on it, it works as debit or credit, but for my online spending, I would rather use paypal. Easy way to keep track of how much I am spending online. =) My webhost bill, my cable bill (ISP) and anything I might buy off ebay comes out of the account.

Thanks vampire, i own a debit card aswell and i was thinking of going with paypal. Thanks for info. :) :)
Knogle 09-17-2002, 06:50 AM Hey guys
Could someone tell me what exactly is the diffrence between a debit card and a credit card? I know what a credit card is, but a debit card? Any info will be greatly appreciated. Thanks! :)
GandalfDDUK 09-17-2002, 07:16 AM A debit card takes the money straight from your bank account whereas a credit card bills you monthly.
ChrisTech 09-17-2002, 10:47 AM Kriz,
If you go with paypal, I suggest setting up an extra 'free checking account' with your local bank. I do it to keep my stuff seperate, but also for the 'just in case' factor.

P.S. If you get a debit card from Union Planters, the debit will take the money from checking right away, but if you use as credit, it will take 3 days to process (meaning you have time to stick that extra green in the bank for larger purchases) =)
