View Full Version : Faster - AMD Athlon XP2000+ or Dual P3 1.0 Ghz

Which of these would be faster for my website:

AMD Althon XP2000+

or

Dual P3 - 1.0 Ghz

The rest of the specs on the system would stay the same (1GB RAM, 36GB SCSI).

The site pushes about 200,000 pageviews a day, all of which use PHP/MySQL heavily. Thanks for your input.

I think Athlon MP would be a better choice than the XP2000...I could be wrong tho. ;)

Ok, but of the two I've listed, which would serve my needs better?

I always prefer dual, as in my experience dual out performaces a single processor. I also prefer the Pentium 3 over the AMD

IMO

The AMD is obviously faster but, its better to have dual processors for a heavy traffic website.

Considering the heavy php/mySQL activity, I'd also have to say the dual configuration would be best. Maybe consider a dual Athlon MP. Probably come in cheaper than the dual P3's.

Isn't the AMD 2000 XP only a 1.67GHz processor?

The dual configuration is better by far.. expecially for processor hungry tasks that can hang one cpu.

Duals are faster for multi-threaded applicatoins, and yes, for sql/php dual processors will work better.

But the most important thing: RAM.

Get 2 gigs if you can.

I would go with the Duals in comparisson to the XP. However the Athlon MP is for serving and workstation situation, I do not know why you would want an XP over an MP in a serving situation. The MP is only $25 more than the XP.

I'd have to ask... does anyone know what the actual difference between the xp's and mp's is, aside from price, and marketing?

The only major difference is the Athlon MP(Multiprocessing), was built specifically for multi-processor applications. There are some Athlon XP dual motherboards out, however they are very expensive.

Also MP processor also features the MOESI cache rotocol to ensure efficient cache integrity in a multiprocessing nvironment.

Most definately the Dual P111/1Ghz.

1) Speed
2) Stability
3) Reliabilty

Having a DUAL is like carrying more Fuel! You got more in reserve!
