View Full Version : HE.net Bandwidth & jmr-hosting Question
Chris Marks 09-15-2002, 03:56 PM Well, I found a really nice deal with jmr-hosting for a managed dedicated system for $189/mo:
> AMD ATHLON XP 2000+
> 1024MB DDR RAM
> 80GB 7200rpm HD
> 300GB HE.net Bandwidth
> Cpanel / WHM included
> Http/Ping server monitoring by support staff
> 3 IPs included and further ip's at $1 per month and need to be justified.
> $199 setup
And I just wanted to get some feedback on this company - from those who have used them/are using them. How's their support? So far from talking to them it's been pretty fast and complete.
I was also wondering about Hurricane Electric's datacenter/bandwidth. Is it good and reliable?
Thanks for all your input!
clocker1996 09-15-2002, 04:07 PM HE is good and reliable yes
JMR ? I don't konw
I didn't want to get that server from him because i've never really heard of him/them before.
Chris Marks 09-15-2002, 04:49 PM Yes, JMR doesn't seem to have much of a track record in the dedicated server industry, atleast not that is commonly known. Everyone has to start somewhere though.
I'm still undecided on it. I would imagine though that if the system was delivered on time and in 'as advertised' condition, there wouldn't be much more to worry about, other than billing. I really would like to give them a try though...just hoping to find someone else who is using their systems.
hotice007 09-15-2002, 05:08 PM i don't know about jmr-hosting since they don't even have their site yet. But I do know that HE.net bandwidth kicks butt, his offer is way too low for HE.net bandwidth, so be careful.
Chris Marks 09-15-2002, 05:10 PM I did a search on these forums and it looks like the people they host on their shared servers are pretty happy with support, etc. They seem to have servers setup in multiple datacenters around the US too. I'll probably sign up for it all this coming week, they said there will be a system available in about 5-6 days.
no1v2 09-15-2002, 05:10 PM Hotice007, JMR isn't the only company offering HE bandwidth for prices like that. If you look at fastservers.net you'll see they offer 300 gigs of HE bandwidth for less than half that. They charge more for the hardware though (setup fee ;))
Chris Marks 09-15-2002, 05:36 PM Their site has been around for awhile, it looks like they're working on a redesign. I did some searching and found that only the index page was disabled: http://www.jmr-hosting.uk.com/contact.html
The price is very low, but like no1v2 said...it seems like most companies get around that with setup fees.
Anyone else out there just hosted on one of their shared servers?
zdwebhosting 09-15-2002, 05:38 PM /me looks around to get info from one of thier dedicated server customers point of view.
kerplunk 09-15-2002, 09:09 PM In other news:
HE.net just bought out Lightning.net (another respectable company)
They run an IRC server too now connected to EFnet, one of the largest IRC networks in the world. (The original one too.)
irc.he.net

how you find this out? where are the press releases? sound like he has it going for them :)
GeorgeC 09-15-2002, 09:28 PM I'm curious. If He.net is supposedly quality bandwidth, how are more and more hosts able to offer it for so cheaply? Something has to give...

They buy the bandwidth in bulk, in 10, 20, 30mbps...
And yea, HE.net is quality bandwidth, they also mirror for mysql.org site, http://mysql.he.net
zdwebhosting 09-15-2002, 09:45 PM and he hosts http://us2.php.net/
although www.php.net click downloads there used to be a mirror link seems rackshack does'nt want to have any mirrors since they took over hosting it?
lol wierd.
Chris Marks 09-16-2002, 09:58 AM Well, I have decided to give them a try. They'll have a server ready by next monday, or at the earliest this friday. I'll definately be giving feedback on their services :)
no1v2 09-16-2002, 01:00 PM Please do, especially since Fastservers still isn't accepting new orders ;)
SuperDon 09-16-2002, 02:13 PM I am sure fastservers recently posted a special in the dedicated specials forum, may be wrong though :)
toma1708 09-17-2002, 04:56 AM About JMR Hosting managed dedicated.
Am I a customer ? Yes.
Am I happy customer ? Yes.
There were some problems in the last month, but mainly related to the datacenter and not the service provided by them.
Chris Marks 09-17-2002, 06:18 AM Thanks toma1708! Anyone else out there using JMR for dedicated hosting?
fatale 09-17-2002, 03:56 PM Hurricane Electric (http://he.net) might be a reliable company if not for the serious spam problem. They host a lot of spammers and they simply refuse to get rid of them. I was sceptical myself for a while, until I started receiving porn spam from their IP space to a webmaster account of one of my sites. Numerous e-mails to abuse@he.net, support@he.net, postmaster@he.net all went unanswered. The spam stopped shortly after I set up an auto-forward rule for the spam to go directly to their abuse/support e-mails and informed them about that. The websites they advertised is still around, so they haven't actually don't anything to rectify the spam problem on a larger scale. It wouldn't surprise me if you start having email problems because Hurricane Electric's IP space will get blackholed by other ISPs.
StephenRS 09-17-2002, 04:20 PM HE.net - Let me chime in. I have two servers an an OpenBSD firewall there. We do every 1/2 second monitoring from both LA and Dallas... YES, every 1/2 second.
HE.net has a lot of "short" outages at the Fremont site. Some only a couple minutes, others have been hours. For anything over 10 minutes, I try to email them - every time I've contacted them it has has been denial of service attacks. At least 3 in the past 3 months. Two of which were on Sunday night (most busy time on the Internet for many sites) during "prime time".
I spent 4 days at the Fremont facility doing installs, it is a nice location... but they need to improve their routing so they can shut down problem customers without doing the entire facility!
One other issue I have with them: Their switches allow broadcast traffic in from other customers, I expect this is going against my bandwidth bills. I complained of this and they dismissed it as not signficant. I didn't like that...
