View Full Version : cPanel/WHM Automate Account Creation
Skillz 12-26-2008, 07:14 PM cPanel/WHM Automate Account Creation
What is the best method to have a script automatically create uesrs/passwords using cPanel?
I'd like to know of my options, I found one but it didn't seem to work. So before I try one that requires me to buy, I'd like to get some feedback on ones that others have used before; so I don't waste money on something that doesn't work.
The setup I would like is to be able to sell the extra space I have on my server to people looking for reasonable/reliable web hosting and the process be completely automatic. From them signing up to the service, paying for it and creating the account for them to use.

Skillz 12-26-2008, 11:00 PM I am sure that is true, but I'm not trying to run a web hosting business per say, so spending more money on something like that would essentially defeat what I am trying to do.
Basically, I have a dedicated server. I do this because I know my site probably will not be able to run on one of those over sellers servers, plus I like having complete control over the server when something goes wrong. Since I will not be using the entire server's resources, I'd like to rent out what I'm not using to help pay for the bill, paying more for software, will just be more out of pocket that I'll have to pay.
I will probably just end up creating the accounts manually, but phpcoin looks promising.

UH-Bobby 12-26-2008, 11:17 PM Well, WHMCS would keep up with the billing and invoicing making your life a lot easier. But, like you said, it might be overkill for you.

Having a fully-automated signup process is a recipe for disaster. What are you going to do about the spammers who sign up with a stolen credit card / PayPal account? Or the script kiddies who use the account to hack your server (or others)? What about illegal content? What's your AUP?
Even if you manage to find only "good" clients, you need to factor in your time (or money, if you want to outsource) for supporting them. And then you'll need to keep their backups... Signup is just the beginning.
In short you should go into hosting in a serious, professional way or not at all.

First of all, add another 1+ for WHMCS (http://www.whmcs.com)
Second of all, making good use of WHMCS fraud models (MaxMind comes to mind) is a nice "layer" to automating a signup process safely, and securely.
Although I do get at what is being said. The OP just wants to resell his extra space and I'm not sure this is the best idea. Maybe try providing is for free to non profit organizations. Maybe get a smaller package/server with your current provider so you don't have that extra space/bandwidth setting around in the first place. All of each are possibilities as well I guess as selling the space of. If you are going to go the selling the space route though, make sure your able to provide ample support to your clients.

Skillz 12-27-2008, 02:44 AM All of my clients will be people I know or have met for the most part. Backups are done at the Data center on a weekly basis. I am on the computer almost 24/7 (if I didnt have to work and sleep) so providing support on that level will not be an issue.
Most of the people I will be providing this for will be people who.
1. Know that it's a dedicated server that I run.
2. Know what they are doing, just do not have the funds to pay for an entire server and don't want to go the over selling hosts way.
3. Know me personally
Having it automated really is just a convince to me, but if it costs too much or is too much trouble then I'll just create the accounts manually like I've been doing.
Just looking into the possibility of doing it automated, so I can be less of a "middle man" when they are creating there accounts.
I've had a dedicated server since early 2003. Ever since I found out about them pretty much. So this isn't going to be a short term thing, for me. Maybe for them, but I'm going to always have a dedicated server to run my web sites off of.
