The Xeon of course if all other items being equal, (Ram, Drives etc)The price of the high end Xeon will cost at least double that of the P3s.

If you are sure you will have a high volume of traffic I would think a duel server setup would be your best bet for the money. One server for the CMS and one for the MySql. That way you could optimize each server for it's task.

have you optimized your mysql server and php scripts? In more than 30% cases non-optimized php & mysql server config leads to high load and sometimes, memory usage.

mmm i guess u mis-understood my Q :)

i didn't purchase that server yet.. i am planning to... and wanted to know whether someone has experience with dual xeons.. compared to dual p3's. I heard somewhere.. that p3's are still damn good in dual set ups.. sometimes even faster than dual xeons.. that's why I wanted to ask.

aaand... yeah.. both would have the same setup.. ram.. hdd's etc wise.. and the xeon server would be 'only' $200 more

:)

I don't think jbb asks about How Athlon compares to Intel, does he?

At dell, the price difference is not really that much, although it's not a fair comparison since the Xeon server uses RDRAM which is a more expensive memory. But it's no way double the price of Dell's P3 servers .... probably just 15-25% difference.

Dual Xeon hands down..

to host one of my mysql/php-driven websitesI agree, get two of them and make a database server out of one and a web server out of the other.

FHDave, he has asked for the best solution for his mysql/php-driven websites. I just tried to help him! without guessing what might be better or stuff ...

and hell, have you even clicked the first link I posted? tell me what do you see? athlon vs. intel? RIGHT! and what systems are benchmarked? single/dual MPs, single/dual Xeons, single/dual Durons and dual PIIIs, so where is your problem?

I have experience with IBM's xSeries 360... they have 4 XEON cpus..... all is good, but I suggest to pay attention to cooling - CPUs work very well but they heat a lot!
