This was crawling in my backyard. Taken with a digital camera in pitch black so it isn't quite in focus but I was impressed at how well it came out. About an inch long.... yikes!

Looks like its either a wolf spider (we have these a lot down here in Florida), or a tarantula (female).

Don't mess with it though. Wolf spiders bite - but they're not poisonous - but some people get reactions to their bites. And tarantulas are poisonous -- but most humans are affected by their bites (same as with wolf spiders).

Keep the baby away from it at all costs!!

Both spiders are native to where you live, Chicken. If you're not sure of it, contact animal control, etc. They'll remove it and put it somewhere where its not going to bother people.

"That's ain't a spider mate. THIS is a spider"
http://www.austmus.gov.au/factsheets/huntsman_spiders.htm
Huntsman spiders are large, long-legged spiders, measuring up to 15 cm (about 6 inches) across the legs.

Little buggers travel at about a foot a second too... kind of hard to get a phone book on top of them as they race across the floor. :)

Yeah I was thinking of that, heh. Please de-stink it first.

Greg... I'd have to agree that my spider is but a wee-spider compared to those you showed. If *those* were crawling in my backyard, I'd buy a gun and shoot it, then mount the carcass on the wall as a trophy.

Samuel, I know the story...

Heh... You should've seen some of the spiders I've killed. The largest spider I seen (inside) was big enough that it covered the light switc plate (that plastic cover around the switch). Big enough to put a saddle on it and ride it

The largest one I've seen (I didn't get the kill for it) was about the size of a human hand, and the SOB was inside the house!

A Huntsman is nothing scary at all....
a lot of my friends have them as pets... we catch them with our hands... they are large... but I don't think it bites... if you approach it the right way.... (I am sure you can tell I live down under =p)
My backyard have a lot of RedBacks... http://www.austmus.gov.au/factsheets/redback.htm
hehehe... pay me my air fair... and I will come to US to get rid of all the spiders for you ppl.... ^_^

That's nothing, I shake 4-5 of these per day from my doormat. To give you an example of the wildlife I am meeting here in rural Florida, one night I heard a bump on my door. Then another. I opened the door a bit and saw nothing. Closed the door, then the same bump bump bump. I thought someone was messing with my nerves. I turned the outside light on and opened the door really quick. There he was, a 10 inch frog looking at me from the doorstep. :D

Next time I find a nice big spider, I will send it over to you Chicken, so it can play with your little fellow. :D

Hehehe... Reminds me of when I worked at a local gas station, and it was about at 10 at night, some cops pulled up with ligts flashing, and an officer wanted to know why I set off the alarm. The owner arrived shortly after, and after a breif inspection of his back office is a rather large treefrog set off the motion sensor and was sitting on his desk. I almost got into a lot of trouble with that one  ...

It was quite hysterical, even the police were laughing... The look on the owners face though was priceless ;) :D

Nice spider! Don't kill it! That's bad luck!

Anyway... speaking of unusual pets... my boyfriend has a hornets nest outside his kitchen window. He lives on the 6th floor in an apartment building. He hans' had a single fly inside all summer (and no hornets either), so that's some really nice neighbours to have. Like a tiny air-force. :)
