Hi everyone, I am looking at the possibility of buying a server and co-locating it at VDI. I am not that familiar with the ins & outs of a server and would really appreciate some help in choosing the appropriate parts.

Could people please check out http://www.newegg.com and suggest the best parts for my server ? As for prices I would consider going up to about $2000 for the whole server, The cheaper the better but I do want to go for quality.

Please give me your recommendations,

Many Thanks

Ja

I don't know about suggesting parts for you, but NewEgg have some very competative prices, we've looked at several places and they are the cheapest we found.

As a rough guide, the more memory the better at least 512Mb would be good as memory makes more differance overall than processor speed. Linux also stresses hard disks so the faster they are the better, for IDE disks IBM make the fastest you can get (About 37Mb/s sustained transfer speed) but SCSI disks still take the honour of being the best for Linux at the moment.

Heck, you might want to consider going to Compunite computers (compunite.com). That's where we get some of our servers from, and it's very convenient. They're just up the road from VDI. You can get a good server from them for less than $2,000 (last time I checked.)

Would it be cheaper to construct a server by buying parts ?

It probably would be cheaper to build it yourself.

Consider the reliability issues surrounding building your own server. (before anyone jumps in and says that people can build their on very reliable servers, keep in mind that i'm not denying the viability of doing so, i'm merely stating that it is easy to simply slap parts together and not worry about a lot of issues that are worth worrying about).

Cheers,

Raj.

Well, don't forget the motherboard. And power supply. And...

You might want to check out PC Mechanic http://www.pcmech.com. Also, contact the data center you plan to host your server in and find out what kind of cases they prefer, and pricing for different size boxes.
