Website with email - best way to setup?

Hello,
I have a general question. My website currently uses external email server to email forgotten passwords, website offers etc. Not a lot of mail traffic.
Will it be better option to consolidate both services on single machine or shall I keep email and web separate. What is your experience?
Thank you

Web and email on same server is supposed to be cheaper and easier to manage. The pros of separating is that if the web sever goes down, the email server is can still receive/send and vice versa.

External email is handy from the standpoint that if the web site is down, you can still send/receive email (e.g. customer emails asking about the status), provided that you have an appropriate DNS configuration.
