Pretend I'm stupid and tell me the steps to sell a domain.
Not how to advertise it per se, I'm sure there are enough sites that do that. Auctions ect.
But say I have a buyer.
How do I go about transeferring ownership?

It's important to be informed if this is your first sale - and I've yet to make my first sale. It's not a siple process, but there procedures.

For my last sale, we negotiated an agreed price, he paid via paypal and initiated a domain transfer from his registrar.
That request later came to me via my registrar which I okayed.
A few days later, the new owner and I are both happy.

If the price is higher than a few $ use a service like www.escrow.com
That's a good point Walter, my last sale was $350.
At what level do you need to go to an escrow service?

I used escrow service (buyer requested it) when I had a domain for sale for over 2k
ps. depends if buyer trust you. I have sold 250..400$ domains directly via paypal and without escrow services.

If you are a seller and ask your client to pay you via paypal, this is good because you receive the money first before you transfer the domain to the new owner.
If I am the buyer, I will use the escrow service to protect my investment.
Cheers.

It's all a matter of trust - but why should I trust someone I know through the Net for one day? For small amounts and if the buyer/seller is in the same country, ok, but everything else...
For a price of $500 you pay $30 for escrow.com - that's fair for sleeping well. If the buyer pays with check the fee is only the half, $15.

In order to maximize my profit margin and minimize the cost of the buyer, I tend to avoid escrow (especially when it's just e.g. $300) but post a SOLD page where my previous sales are listed. In this way, potential buyers would feel more comfortable.

FYI, Paypal considers domains to be non-tangible goods and does not offer coverage via their Protection Plan.
