hi,

it seems the "data" center I colocate to is focused on voice, rather than data. So I can only get bandwidth about 1.5 mbps. but their ping is very good.

is this acceptable for web hosting?

thanks

it completly depends on the amount of clients you have, the amount your planning on having.

Even if you dont have a lot of clients on the server(s) daring peak times you may need more than 1.5MBPS.

I think the questions is, "Is this good enough for you?" I'm sure many people here have servers which don't peak over 128Kbps, however many people have servers that do, sooooo, the question is really what are your needs?

I also don't quite understand if 1.5 mbps is the most you can get (???), if this is the total amunt of bandwidth they have, etc., or just the portion they gave you, etc. I'm guessing they have a T1 (or worse DSL) connection? It isn't that a T1 isn't adequate for hosting, just that it might not meet your needs, and nowadays a T1 might not cut it for long.

hi,

they have 4 t1 lines. so the total is only 6 mbps.

For my need, I am new in this business and not quite sure.

However, my server is good.

pentium 4 2.2ghz, 1 gb ram, 2x80gb ide raid 1 hard disk.

I do not have much clients at this time. but I want to have a lot.

They are fairly inexpensive and my server is already there. So I may give them a try.

thanks

If thats all the datacenter has, unless they are small time, at peak hours you wont get much. Considering the datacenter would need to be making at least 3,000 dolars a month to afford those lines they definatly have more than 12 servers which means at peak hours you wont get more than .5Mbps, if that at all.
