What do you think about SlincHost.com as the name of my hosting business, the domain is available, and do you have any ideas of what my logo should be?

interesting, is slinc a word, not that that matters. If you can think of branding for it it will be fine.

oh and what do you think of this deal:
1 gb hard drive space
15 gb bandwith
unlimited domains
unlimited ftp accounts
unlimited pop3 accounts
SSL support
CGI-bin
for $17/month(and $30 setup fee)
Tell me what you think of this plan, and if you know any better, please tell me, because im just starting to resell and i dont have much money to invest.

You shouldn't have to pay a setup fee unless you are getting a dedicated server

zachattack87
09-14-2002, 04:34 PM
Well it comes with cpanel, and it comes with my own nameservers, ns1.yourdomain.com and ns2.yourdomain.com, and i think it has an uptime guarantee of 98.5%

Did you do a background check on these forums to see if they are reliable? Remember, they are the backbone of your company. If they their servers are down "your" servers are down.

Price looks good. Not unbelievable cheap. I'ld still say loose the setup fee though :D

98.5% isn't all that great. Most hosts provide 99.5% or above.

Pilgrim

Aye, but there is a difference between promising and delivering. Call me weird (many do) but I would feel more comfortable with a host that sets his target a little lower (98.5) then with a host that promises 99.9% uptime guaranteed! ;)

I have little faith in those numbers. Not to mention that I always wonder what the guarantee is worth to me? With the kind of hosting companies these days I wonder what ANY guarantee is worth. And even if I do get my $ 17 refunded because the server was up 74.8% last month. What good is it to me now that all my customers have left?

98.5% seems realistic, feet on the ground and honoust.
Then again, I could be profoundly wrong :D

DO A SEARCH ON THE FORUMS !!! ;)

zachattack87

Well I wasn't so sure if it really was 98.5%, but ill find out right now what their exact guarantee is

i dont like your choice of domain names, what does slinc mean or stand for?

zachattack87

And lets say that this service is down 98.5%, that is only 10 hours more than 99.9%, of the whole month, and those 10 hours might even be at night, if your lucky, when not as many people are online. So is 10 hours really a big deal?

Oh dear. Are you SURE you want to go into hosting? :D

10 Hours per month is a BIG deal to your customers. And they have no problem in letting you know constantly how big a deal it is until you don't sleep at night anymore.

But hey, a lower uptime guarantee doesn't mean that they'll be down more. It just means that you won't get a refund until it gets below 98.5%.
Personally I don't give any guarantee but I've still had a 100% uptime during the last 5 months.

What do you mean by you dont like my choice of domain names, well someone just suggested that to me because its a combination of my last name and inc(incorporated), so slinc.
What do you think of it?

:bawling: You make me cry pilgrim!!!
Well, for my first month, im sure i won't have too many customers, id estimate maybe 3 or 4 if im lucky, so 3 or 4 is not too many people where i wont be able to sleep, and then if really is a big deal, ill learn from my mistakes, and switch servers. and remember 98.5% is just what is guaranteed, that doesnt mean it will actually happen, and for my first month, i will really see how this server is.

Zack, do you have any knowledge when it comes to hosting? To me, it looks like you read something that said web hosting is an easy way to get money. Believe me it isn't. I went into the business thinking that i would get 20 customers in the first month. Im up to a total of 4 now! Im also paying $160 a month for advertising. I don't think you have thought about that aspect. Your company won't become popular just by putting it on yahoo and google. Try local adverting, i hear its a good method.

I do know about hosting, and i think im a pretty fast learner, if i do say so myself, and i already have my own website. I just dont know much about reselling, but now i pretty much know a whole bunch, just from going around WHT!

Quote from you - "And about the SSL, the server im thinkin about goin with has SSL, but how do you do it, do u need a SSL certificate? "

To me, it looks like you have no idea on what to do. Im not trying to discourage you but, i would spend a few weeks learning every possible thing you could about hosting. Read up on Cpanel, SSL, payment processing, advertising, and support. Good Luck!

Well i just dont know about SSL because i never used it before, and once i find out, it shouldn't be too hard.
