I have a problem connecting to my host server with Dreamweaver since more than 2 days ago. I have send in support ticket to my host but the problem is still not solved till now.

Error Message

An FTP error occurred - cannot open remote folder /public_html/.
550 /public_html: No such file or directory

Dreamweaver cannot determine the remote server time. The Select Newer and Synchronize commands will not be available.

My Dreamweaver Settings

Access: FTP
Host Directory: /public_html/

I have been using the same setting for the past 1 year plus w/o problem until 2 days ago. All my domains are facing the same problem when using Dreamweaver to upload files to the server.

I have been sitting in front of the pc trying to connect for the past two day and I found something.

When I change the setting for Host Directory from /public_html/ to public_html/ I am able to log in

BUT

I am unable to upload any files which have been edited.

Error message:

An FTP error occurred - cannot put file
550: Overwrite permission denied

If i edit a file and want to upload the newer version to the server, i need to deleted the existing file on the server before i can upload the newer one. Uploading new or non-edited existing files is possible.

I am trying hard to solve the problem, searching for possible solutions on various newsgroups and forums. I realised that it is a server side problem.

Definately not a software problem on my side. I tested on a total of 4 different pc, 3 pc at one location and another pc at another location. All shows the same problem with the same error messages.

I was told to try changing the permission settings of the directories. The fact is I have not done anything to the directories permission settings before this thing happened. Anyway I tried and changing the permissions does not work.

I have already contact my host support. The reason why I seek help here is because my host support seems to be unable to solve the problem.

Please advise.

I really appreciate it if someone can help. Thanks in advance.

Other than using dreamweavers FTP functionality. have you tried using a proper FTP program like FlashFXP? using an FTP program will give you a better overview of what is actually happening.

No. The problem is not with your FTP. You have contact your host for this. I think they have not set the attributes for your dreamweaver files. Just tell them that you want write permission and hope this works.

Are you absolutly positively 100% definatly sure you have done nothing different during the last couple of days then the you did during the last year? No changes? You didn't buy a new pc and reinstall dreamwever? You didn't change your userid? Absolutly nothing?

In 99% of all cases the 550 error means that you previously uploaded files while logged into the server with userid A and now are trying to upload files using userid B. That won't work.

Other then that it is probably easy for the host to find out what you are doing wrong by asking you a couple of questions and looking at the permissions settings for your files.

Anyway, thanks for everybody kind attention and advice. The problem has been solved by my host excellent service after i managed to contact a support guy who solved a similar issue before.

I was told the CPanel upgrade wiped out some global ftpd configuration settings thus causing the problem for the past 2 days.

Thanks everybody. :)

Try to use the host directory as

public_html/

and not /public_html/

I hope this resovles your issue.

The permissions on your files have been changed - when DreamWeaver does a synchronise it creates a temporary folder in your account called something like WXYZHETS and uses files in their to track dates / times to check which files are newer / older.

Your ftp user no longer has permissions to create this folder and DreamWeaver can't get the file dates / times hence the Dreamweaver cannot determine the remote server time message.

Either you or your host have changed the permissions on your web root - if you know you haven't then it must be them . . .

It does seem odd that his very first post at WHT would be to revive a 2 year old thread. :eek2:
