Welcome to WHT and the Web Hosting industry.
When starting out, you may want to start small and grow your business. Dedicated server may or will be too steep to begin with. VPS server could be reasonable though I highly recommend starting out with a reseller account.
The downside of a reseller account is you will have no control over the server so you will be reliant on your providers support.
The upside is most reseller accounts come with private label nameservers, so if someone queried your ips, your company name is shown.
If you have good capital to invest and you would like more control of a server, I strongly suggest going with a VPS server.
Start small, grow, and expand.
Good Luck.

I recommend a reseller account. It will get you started at a low price. Once you get it going and get a customer base, you can move up to Dedicated/CPS and transfer your accounts over.

As allportpc mentioned, a reseller account may be ideal for its ease-of-use. You can upgrade to a VPS or dedicated server later.

I would say start with reseller account. Once you have a good customer base move to VPS and move to dedicated server only when you can afford it.
Reseller account will be the best to start with :-). Best of luck for your new venture.

Starting out with a dedicated server right away may not be a very good move. As you mentioned you are looking to start up with a small package, so a reseller plan is what you should consider. You can use private nameservers feature in reseller hosting which will make it look like you are running the hosting company.

Start with a reseller account with private nameservers... you can always upgrade to a VPS or dedicated server down the line.

Start with a reseller. It's recommended to get one from a host who also provide reliable VPS or dedicated server. That way, whenever you decide to upgrade it won't be that big of a hassle and there might not be downtime.

Just out of curiosity....what is your start up budget? This would give everyone a much better idea of where you "could" start off instead of everyone pointing you in a certain direction saying this is where you "should" start off at.

Is that really important? As long as your pricing can be competitive enough (via the reseller program), or you add additional value to the packages (server management etc.), you can do just fine I should think.

I would recommend a reseller account if you are just starting which will be a cheaper alternative. Once your company increases you can then upgrade to a vps or dedicated.

What is your budget?
As others have mentioned, a reseller account would be the best way to dip into the industry of reselling.
The reason is because it will take some time to get a customer base to support the costs of having your own server.
It makes more sense to get a reseller account and grow your business and scale your costs as you expand. If you have some extra money, then invest in additional services to different your new company and products you can offer your clients as well as use the money to advertise, etc.
Yes there are cons as someone else mentioned like not having complete full control over the server, but the benefits in savings out weights that IMO. Pick a provider you can trust and stick with as you start.
If you really still would rather have more control, then you should look into a managed VPS or dedicated server.
