google analytics

I came across http://www.google.com/analytics/ and signed up for it.
Does this automatically track my site? Or do I need to put the html code on my website?
I've been having trouble (see my other post on adding counters) with adding html code to my site. I've copied

Yes, you will need to put their tracking code into your page.

Yes you need to place their HTML code on your site as directed. Don't understand what you mean by it doesn't show up correctly.

when I try to paste the code on my page, and then go to publish the page, it shows up as the actual html text right on my page.
So all anyone sees on the bottom of the page is the code - not a counter.

You have to put the code in HTML - I'm guessing you're pasting it in your WYSIWYG design tab instead of code tab. Google analytics doesn't put a visible counter on your live site. It tracks usage of your live site via their dashboard - reports.

How do I fix this problem? I have not idea how to write html, so I've just been copying/pasting it.

You don't need to know HTML. Explain the process you're using to post new data to your site. Are you using FTP, FrontPage, DreamWeaver, Expression Web or some sort of proprietary site builder?

Honestly, I don't know. GatorHost is who I use. I've asked them for assistance but they weren't able to help. In fact, I was on the phone with tech-support recently and he did a trial-run with entering a code

Whatever you are using is modifying what you paste into text thats viewable as a web page, hence its not grabbing the HTML tags (such as "<Script>"). Can you explain the process you use to paste this into your page? Do you load a program, go to a website, what do you do?

After I signed up on www.google.com/analytics, it gave me the html code while I was on the google analytics site still, and from there all I did was copy

Right, but what we're trying to figure out is more details on how you copied and pasted it into your site.. Because the way you are currently doing it is not properly doing it. Walk me through the process you use to paste it into your site. Do you go to a website and click on something? If so, what website do you go to? Do you load a program on your computer? If so, what is it?

I believe the directions were to paste it just prior to </body>. I could be wrong.
