Terms Of Service, Acceptable Use Policy, Service Agreement, Please-Don't-Sue-Us, all of these are terms we use to describe the rules you're legally and/or non-legally bound to when you sign up for anything. It's like life insurance for your provider. It means no matter how stupid you think we are, you're even more stupid for not reading our legal mumbo-jumbo.

Terms of service set out the ground rules on what is acceptable when you use the servers of a web host provider. They describe the allowable use of your account as well as the conditions in which the web host will accept responsibility, or make efforts to resolve issues that arise. Some also list the presumed understanding of the customer as to the workings of the internet, under the assumption that there are certain things that customers should have previous knowledge of.

In a worst case scenario they're used to specify what a web host can do (or will do) insofar as their service is concerned, as well as support offered, when complaints arise.

In general terms of service are designed to be a little stronger than the web hosts general code of conduct. None of us enjoy the need to mention the TOS when working with customers and it's a rare day that it needs to be pulled out and dusted off, but a terms of service page gives both the web host and customer a sense of protection, as both should have a clear understanding of what it says, and what both parties have then agreed to when the customer signs up.

TOS = Terms of service.
Hosts use it to protect themselves from clients's abusements and limit them.

In other words, TOS is there to screw you. :rolleyes:

Hosts do not use it to screw you!
They use it to define and prevent abuse by one site that would effectively screw all of the other accounts on that server.

Well said!
