View Full Version : shopping cart

Hi All,
I have currently still trying to find the best shopping cart for an art/poster online store.
Before, I have downloaded and tried avactis and I found 2 issues:
1) I want to edit on my desktop locally and see the changes right away and only upload to the server once everything is finished. However, this is not possible. Once I've made some changes, I would need to upload to the server for me to see the changes. Is there anyway to bypass this?
2) When avactis update the version (from 1.81 to 1.82), would this mess up all the customization that I have completed? (I am not sure about this one since I haven't done it yet).
Is there a cart that can bypass those two?
Also, I have read some suggestion of magneto. It is free, is that correct?
Any info or advice would be very helpful.
Thanks.

eacollin 12-01-2008, 03:23 AM Yes magneto is Free; so is Oscommerce. CRE Loaded have a shopping cart too. I did play with activis when they came out with their demo version sometime ago, but not recently. You could just remote ftp into your account this way you can edit your files on the server and save backups before you edit. If you are using Dreamweaver setup a ftp account this way you can access the files directly off the server.

D3niss3 12-02-2008, 09:03 AM Based on our experiences with developing e-commerce sites, the most reliable and easiest to update is OSCommerce. Though I would say that Magento Commerce is a good choice, OSCommerce seem to be the easiest to manage.
It actually depends on the person handling an e-commerce site. Open-Source programs has their own common properties but sometimes has also their own distinct property which you may want to explore more and think over if you can handle.

HivelocityDD 12-02-2008, 09:45 AM yes magneto is free open source product. But compared to os-commerce its a bit difficult to work with.
If you are using quanta editor you can configure FTP details in the editor and can upload it after you make a modification. Also you can preview the interface using F6.
If you are working in a local machine you can configure a replica of your server by setting it up in /etc/host if you are using linux machine.
