Anyone know of any good web hosting control panels that are free/open source?

There is only one problem I find with opensource projects. They tend to dissapear as quickly as they pop up. Its a serious consideration when the system will most likely support the major part of your business. Someone has to support it until its stopped being used.

SimpleCP is a free cp.

The only two stable/working ones (that I know for sure work) are webcp and simplecp.

There are a few others, but I have never seen them working (personally).

Yes, unfortunately, open source projects can only survive if the people let it :( If no one helped linus, we wouldnt have linux. we have to put food on our tables too. however, the plus of open source cp's are, that unlike closed source cps, if the developers go away, no new (official) features would be added but anyone can look at the code and fix any problems - which is why alot of people embrace open source
