Looking for hosting partner for HD movie streaming site
We are developing a HD gaming movie streaming/downloading site. By HD, we mean H264 encoded (.mp4) movies with roughly a bitrate of 1850-2500 kbps. The concept of gaming movie streaming sites isn't new, and has been around for years on numerous sites such as www.sourceradio.com or www.noobflicks.com. Of course you can find a lot of these sort of movies on the common streaming sites as youtube and google video, but as there are services available for specifically these sorts of movies, gamers tend to prefer using them due to their better video quality and targeted user base.
First off I want to make clear, this won't work like a youtube or google video (or like noobflicks) where a user can submit a video and it will appear on the site after X amount of time. All users can submit videos for approval, but only full length movies (usually 4-10 minutes) will be accepted. Furthermore, these movies won't appear automatically, but they will be manually encoded for the best streaming settings after which they are manually uploaded and submitted to the website. As such, browsing movies on the site isn't so much about using the search feature, but more about just browsing movies in different categories.
The two examples above (sourceradio and noobflicks) both offer HD movies. Sourceradio offers both SD and HD, but only SD are available for free members. Noobflicks on the other hand just offers HD movies and it offers them to any users without the need for registration, but noobflicks works a lot like youtube where it has an automated process of getting the clips added to the site (the encoding is done server-side). Sourceradio is similarly to us only hosting approved movies where as noobflicks hosts anything from movies to clips. Neither service really offers what we would; perhaps their good points together would be a more accurate description of our service.
Should be noted that HD movies do not only require a decent internet connection from a user, but they need a semi-good PC to be able to play them with a constant frame rate as well. However, gamers tend to have the required hardware to be able to play HD movies without problems.
Most of the development of the site is ready, and as such we are looking to push the site online soon for beta. What we are looking for is a hosting company to provide a mirror for the movies or host the website along with the movies. The highest concern is the bandwidth. We do not expect the bandwidth to be very high, but it might spike a lot. As such it would be ideal (although not a requirement) that the connection could handle spikes in the bandwidth usage without problems. If you would mirror the movies, needless to say the cpu usage would be relativly low due to no process running; as it would just be serving files. Where are as hosting the entire site would require some CPU usage as well (it's written in PHP, mostly cached though, with extensive use of ajax to avoid unnecessary reloading of pages). As such, the real concern is just bandwidth and especially handling spikes in it. Due to the type of the site, this offer would be perhaps most ideal for a gaming server provider, but of course we accept hosting from other interested parties as well. What we would offer is advertising through out the site which can be adjusted to your needs (video/banner/text links and any sort of reviews or articles)
If anyone isn't really clear about bitrates and what type of quality some bitrate is, for reference:http://www.noobflicks.com/watch/2753/auto-aim that is roughly 1800-1900 kbps on average. (Click the fullscreen as the little window doesn't give much information regarding the quality of the stream, and if the movie doesn't start playing for you, try refreshing the window).
The website isn't online yet as stated earlier, but the domain to be used has a slight amount of traffic already (and has had the last 4 years I've owned it), but the traffic on the site should be relativly low for start (but would also need the amount of bandwidth needed would be low, and similarly when the site receives higher traffic amounts the bandwidth needs would increase).
More details and previews of the site can be provided on request.
