View Full Version : Asking before getting yet another server :)

I am fairly new to this dedicated server business... although I've managed to go through 2 companies in as many months. I've read tons of things here... and still have a few questions.

We're looking for unmanaged, but we'd at least like someone to answer original setup things (DNS names and such.)

We'd prefer to have the server never down for more than 2 hours, at the very most. Ergo, are there any companies who don't force 8-28 hour waits for a reboot?

Is Ensim really unpatchable? We were advised not to patch it, even though it has obvious kernal bugs (which we encountered.)

TIA, at least I'll know what to ask for in the next ad we put here. LOL!

Hello,

Get a server with a remote reboot port so you can reboot the server yourself.

If you update your server ( say php ) that will void the agreement with Ensim I believe ( not 100% sure ) - I wouldn't use Ensim personally.. however at $199/yr for unlimited domains... its quite a bargin :)

I heard of this 'remote port'. How does that work? Some software that allows you to access that port and thereby reboot?

Hello,

With the remote reboot port your able to login to a web GUI interface and simply click on a button to reboot the server :)

Hey,
Ive had servers at several providers now, and I'd consider my current provider, HE.net, the best so far.
My buddy in NewYork has a full rack there, and he could do you a cheaper deal than HE themselves, and it also includes a remote reboot function.
You can ask him for a quote via email, support@zoidial.com
Hope you find what you're looking for

Some software that allows you to access that port and thereby reboot? Its more or less a power strip that has a either a web GUI interface, a telnet, or a dial up for doing the reboots. Do a search on Google for "remote reboot" and you will see a lot of sites that actually sell these devices.

What I don't understand is why they are so expensive. They seem extremely simple to me....

What I don't understand is why they are so expensive. They seem extremely simple to meIt's a reasonably small market, which will certainly contribute to the price as sales will be limited. Technically, it's probably quite a simple device.
