Why not try phpList? I haven't used it lately, but I am sure you can create personalized newsletters with it.

Personally, I use 1-2-All (http://www.activecampaign.com/12all/).
I've also used DadaMail (http://mojo.skazat.com) and had very good success with it as well. (It'll help in particular, to go into the Config file and remove the list headers from the template ;) so it's not screaming out to every ISP, "THIS IS MAIL FROM A LIST AND YOU SHOULD FILTER ME!")
:D LOL

PhpList is an adequate free option. We have encountered very little trouble with it.

For mass mailing your newsletters, you can try to use pommo (a versatile mass mailing software).
It is a good one. You can try to visit www.pommo.org (http://www.pommo.org) :)
See there if it matches your need :)

Pommo is sweet. Super easy to set up and use. Nice looking. Big downside for me though is that it doesn't allow you to schedule mailings in advance. I've spent years training my clients to schedule their newsletter mailings for the early morning hours. As soon as Pommo offers this feature I'll be moving to it big time. If scheduled mailings aren't on your must-have list then it's a no brainer to use.

Hi,
I use Group-mail, it's easy to setup and you can manage your templates. For every customertype (e.g. Country Clients) i use a own template.
The free version allows up to 99 users per group, if you buy it, you can increase the users per group.

Sweet! I think i'm in love with Pommo :) I got started on this one called Newsletter Studio (http://www.effectivestudios.com/NewsletterStudio.htm) which is awesome but i dunno about jumping into a $600 application in the middle of a recession :( .. I'll give feedback as i'm gonna download install and blast this morning :)

You could also code your own software. I hesitate to recommend the "geeky" solution, but email newsletter software is pretty easy to code in PHP or Perl.

Nerd... lol.. Anyway Pommo is GREAT for what it does.. Installed it this morning.. sent out a blast of 600 (all bounced back bcuz i forgot i put a 30 e-mails per hour per domain limit on my server lol) .. Very easy to install, very easy to use.. very very very basic but it DOES segment nicely (city, state, color etc..) Now I might follow mike's advice and build on top of it for some reporting.. gotta have some reporting ...

List Messenger might be a good choice for small lists.
