View Full Version : RackMount Cases
Vortech 03-22-2001, 10:20 AM Any one know some good sites to get 1U and 3U Rackmount cases that don't cost you out the A$$.
We use alot of enlight cases now but they are high for what you get.
Thanks
Fiber 03-22-2001, 01:35 PM BoomRack
http://www.outsideloop.com has them.
Vortech 03-22-2001, 02:25 PM Thanks for the link Fiber. But they are higer then the enlight cases. I get the 3U's from enlight for about 203.00 each. Not to made but was hoping i was missing some thing..LOL
Boomrack 4U's are like 299.00 to high for me for just a server case..LOL
But thinks any way they have some other cool stuff there to. ;)

dektong 03-22-2001, 04:19 PM First, try http://www.rackmountnet.com. I have used two of their 1U rackmount (link: http://www.rackmountnet.com/rackmountchassis/rackmountchassis_1ua.htm). They have been working pretty good. The cooling is pretty good also. I used ASUS CUSI-FX motherboard which has a reported overheating problem if used in 1U rackmount. Well, I used the same motherboard, Intel P3 733, 512MB PC133, 3COM NIC (PCI), 2x30.7 7200 rpm ATA66 in this 1U rackmount and never have this problem. My server has been up for 22 days straight without even one second of downtime due to hardware problem/overheating. This 1U rackmount is around $210 each with 200W power supply.
Als try http://www.caseoutlet.com (the same company as http://www.casetronic.com). I just ordered 4 of these 1U rackmounts, http://www.caseoutlet.com/ipc/ct-a123/ct-a123.htm. The cases just arrived today, haven't had time to play around with them... So I can't tell anything good/bad about them. But I really like the design. You can also add up to 8 fans for much better cooling... The price they charge for it is $210 (With 200W power supply). If you are interested, call for Jennifer. I got a special price for her for $190 each.
I had a plan to buy supermicro cases. Supermicro cases are pretty expensive (supposed to be good/better quality), but the one that is really affordable is SC811 (1U rackmount). See the picture at http://www.supermicro.com/PRODUCT/Chassis/SC811-SCA.htm. You can get this (IDE version, no backplane and without slim CDROM/FDD combo) for $209 at http://www.acmemicro.com/ (price at: http://www.acmemicro.com/price3.htm#csp).
Finally, try all these links:
http://www.rackmount.com
http://www.rackmountpro.com
http://www.rackmountequipment.com
http://www.atlantec.net
and many others (do a search on rackmount on any search engine).
cheers,

Vortech 03-23-2001, 01:35 PM They are great just what i was looking for. Going to order 20 of them now :) I like the 2U's they have the 3 PCI they will work great for me. 1Us are not bad for Linux servers or small windows server. So i might order 10 of each :)
Thanks agian i love them sites and just the right price to...
dektong 03-23-2001, 01:51 PM your quite welcome.. :)
So, which company are you going with? Gee... 20 of them, that's quite a lot for me :D All the best for your business!
cheers,

I bought one of the kits from Rackmountpro with the MSI board, at it overheated over and over again. What motherboard does everyone recommend for the 1U Enlight cases?
dektong 03-23-2001, 04:44 PM Jeff, does the motherboard still working when you say it "overheats"? This interests me since I will be using MSI boards also (MSI 6315, 815EMPro). What is the definition of "overheat"? My Asus CUSI-FX does put off some heat; it warms the top of my 1U case, but does it mean it overheats? No... don't think so...
cheers,
I have not gotten a 1U system to work with an MSI 815EMPro or whatever the model number is motherboard yet... Plus the onboard NIC will not natively work with Redhat...

How come? In what way? It just won't boot? Hang up in the middle?

Gee... I think they are using Intel chipset (i815) and the same for the NIC (Intel chipset too). Shoot... I bought 4 of these motherboards already! :( :(
cheers,

Vortech 03-23-2001, 10:04 PM What is a good Mother board with onboard Video and Nic that support Redhat with no problem with install. Makes it much easyer to setup if every thing is supported right out the box at least it does for me..LOL
I like asus and supermicro and tyan but not sure if they have to many with onboard video and nic that support redhat or not.
dektong 03-23-2001, 10:14 PM I thought Intel Motherboards, D815EEAAL or something like that and Intel CA810EAL, have been the motherboard of choice for 1U rackmount (since they have video/LAN on board). I am pretty sure RH should support Intel NIC, right? (different story with my other ASUS CUSI-FX where the NIC is based on SiS630E chipset). Hm... that should lead me to believe that MSI 815EMPro which is based on Intel chipset (i815) and Intel's NIC should work fine with RH.... Whys shouldn't it? Gee... I need to return these motherboards... :(
I can't get any of the 815EAAL onboard NIC's (which are not microATX) to work with Redhat. However, they do work with FreeBSD 4.2.
I need to find some 810EAL boards... I hear they work. Any ideas of where I can get 4 of these at a good price?
The MSI boards I got in work for a while (at idle), but then the system hangs after like 15 minutes of use. I assume it's a matter of heat, but I don't really know. It also only seems to happen when I put the cover on the case.
That sounds like a heat issue. Can you add more fans?
Well, from a previous post (not sure which one) I know that Burst.net had said that only certain boards will operate in Enlight 1U cases... There really isn't much space for more fans, but I'm sure you could do something.

Looks like the overheating problem comes from the CPU (not a motherboard problem). What kind of CPU fan do you use? I like the one made from Thermaltake Golden Orb (lowe profile version, for 1U rackmount), one of the best CPU fan out there.
cheers,

That's the exact fan I'm using.
dektong 03-30-2001, 10:30 PM All right, here is another update.
I tested my MSI 6315 D815EMPro motherboard, using Intel P3 866 Mhz with 256 MB PC133 (Micron brand/board) and Maxtor DiamondMax 30.7 GB 7200 rpm ATA66 HD in 1U rackmount (bought from http://www.casetronics.com). The rackmount case come with 2x4cm cooling fan. I also use Thermaltake Golde Orb (low profile) for the CPU fan/heat sink. As I know it, the CPU can go as hot as 55 degrees Celcius (about 132 degrees Farenheit). The system temperature went up to 44 degrees Celcius (around 109 degrees Farenheit). The top of the case did get warm, but I think this is normal...
I installed RH 7.2 and indeed the onboard NIC does not seem to be recognised (anyway I can test this?). But I did not get any system hang.... I let the server idle for hours and hours for more than two days straight (I even let it idle for 33 hours before I try to type something). Not even a single glitch of error especially due to overheating problem. It seems that during these idle time, the CPU temperature went down to around 40 degrees celcius (about 104 degrees Farenheit) and the system temperature was even lower.
It was mentioned to me by casetronics that I should not plan to use CPU higher than 933 Mhz (933 was kinda pushing already) inside the 1U rackmount. So Jeff, what CPU did you use?
So, besides the onboard NIC does not seem to work, I was quite satisfied with the motherboard, actually...
What do you think?
cheers,
