sitekeeper 09-14-2002, 05:15 AM I happen to see an offer on WHT for a company offering a 10-day free trial of their Virtual Dedicated Servers so I decided to give them a try out of curiosity. The company is called ISP-Server and their site is at http://www.isp-server.com
The service was very good during the 10 days I used them. The control panel "ISP Manager" was great.
bandwidth 09-14-2002, 03:38 PM Isnt using a vps kind of risky, what if the other people on your server are running a porn site and a Counter-Strike server?
sitekeeper 09-14-2002, 03:44 PM Wouldn't that be true of any shared hosting server?
ckpeter 09-14-2002, 03:46 PM Yes, that would be true.
For VPS/VDS, whether other users on the same server will affect you depends on the software used. I know ensim has performance isolation, while freevsd do not.

no not at all. with a shared hosting plan your not going to be able to run any game servers, you wont have enough privlages to install it, assuming that you even have shell access.
ckpeter 09-15-2002, 12:24 AM Even without root access, a virtual site can still use up a lot of resources - runaway CGI processes, lots of database connections, many mails, etc... You don't need to run a game server to slow down everyone.

sitekeeper 09-15-2002, 04:38 AM I can only speak about servers at ISP-server. It was explained to me that each VDS has whatever free resources that are available on the servers. As soon other VDS’s on the server need resources they are then shared equally. At a certain point when the server become busy you are guaranteed a certain amount of system resources. While you can use more then your guaranteed amount you will never have less then that amount.

oh ok, thanks sitekeeper.

Yep :agree:, i like it too. I've heard that they are making a new version of it!! Will wait for it, it should be much better and more powerful.
Everyday 06-09-2003, 12:31 PM I know that http://webreseller.net offers VPS servers with Cpanel. Its not on their site yet but they do it.
tamouh 06-11-2003, 07:21 PM don't make the mistake to go with mehost, they're the absolute worst
TalonKarrde 06-11-2003, 07:58 PM Care to share some more information?
tamouh 06-11-2003, 08:46 PM ah my friend, I don't even know where to start!
It all started on a very black day. Their sale response was FANTASTIC. like you'd think if support is as good as sales, things would be good.
anyway, i think there is only one guy in this whole mehost mess. its Jason (he is here on WHT as well). He used to take care of support, maintenance, billing, sales...etc....etc.
first, things were OK, but very slow support, and poor server security.
Then, we get no support.....tickets take 3 - 5 days to get answered.
after, they employeed some guys from india to do the support
later, the server became over loaded (they're running dual PIII 1G, 2GB RAM, 2 x RAID1 IDE 40GB HD).
CPU utilization shots up the roof, and RAM was crowded. you can see the server dying by the look of mySQL response. In fact, hard drives are ALWAYS over 80% full....and they used to reach 100% full .
Server down times became a regular habit, and kernel/php/cpanel upgrades became nightmare, no notification, and the server takes 1/2 hr - 1 hr to get back on.
Funny thing, if they notify you of an upgrade (like adding the 3rd HD they did), the upgrade won't take place until after a week !! On the announcement, it said tonight!
So, where am I ? Yah....so poor server performance, the server uses about 350 - 400GB of bandwidth monthly. Lots of adult sites, I can't even count them no more.
Ahh......here is the breaker: they deleted our main account (they claim a mistake......I say it was intentional). One of the indian guy claimed our account had moved to the backup folder (ha ?). and WITHOUT our permission, he deleted the account completely. we didn't even have a recent backup ....that son@#$#$@#$!%.
so we email, and email, and fax, and email....ya ya.....we're contacting the NOC to get the backups........guess who is the NOC ? Jason of course.
Of course humble Jason says there are no backup. (How about the daily backup listed on the website?). I had to learn the hardway they solely depend on RAID1.
My work worth over a year of hard time and complicated skills have evaporated. I actually went into depression for three days after....no talk, no eat, no work.
So we contacted Jason again to see what kind of compensation we can arrange for. we agreed on 3 mo. of free hosting.
Surprise! Surprise! Jason didn't stand on his word, and we've been billed for two months out of the 3 months so far. Jason doesn't answer support tickets, nor ICQ requests. so pretty much I can kiss my free offers good bye!!
That is, my friend, my sad story. And if you search WHT, you'll see much more victims. You can even search http://forums.mehost.com/
So, if you're going with mehost.com , or any of its affiliates pwebhosting, dedicatednow or any other organization ran by Jason, I'd be very worry and very very careful. In fact, I'd not even consider going there.
Another note, their servers are absolutely not secure and can be hacked easily....as well, someone on the server is accessing user accounts (I've caught them accessing mine at least with no permission or request). You're pretty much under the mercy of minimum wage technicians living in India.........go figure!
I don't even have the option to move anymore, its more hassle to move out than to be stuck with them (as long as their servers don't die....grrrrrr)
TalonKarrde 06-11-2003, 09:07 PM Well, that's warning enough for me
