View Full Version : Looking to Share/Occupy Unused Space on Dedicated Server

I was recently booted from a CWIHosting shared server plan because they thought that I was occupying too much memory (20MB) to remain on a shared server (with over 1000 other users). I am wondering whether any users with a dedicated server (either RAQ or Linux) with Perl/MySQL and CGI execution capability from every directory would be willing to sublet a portion of their server. I would only need:

200 MB of disk space (I currently use 7MB but need room for my databases to grow.)
up to 20GB of monthly transfer (I currently use under 3GB)
1 dedicated IP address (I provide my own DNS)
Perl/DBI/MySQL, and the ability to create and administer MySQL databases.

I do not get enough traffic or revenue to justify having a dedicated server to myself. If you would be willing to sublet a portion of your dedicated server to me, please e-mail me at lgrover2000@hotmail.com with your server's specifications, the company it is currently hosted with, the monthly and setup fees you wish to assess, and how soon my site could be setup (it is currently offline).

I have been seriously considering the RackShack $99 month plan, and will probably opt to purchase that plan and sublet server resources to other users, over this board, if nobody is willing to sublet to me. If you have the resources available, please e-mail me ASAP so I can get my site back up as soon as possible.

You probably don't need a dedicated server, there are plenty of virtual hosting plans that offer that much space and bandwidth. Off the top of my head there's Communitech.net (http://www.communitech.net), but I'm sure you can find many others in the advertising forum on this BBS.

Out of the frying pan and into the fire. CommuniTech has a history of booting sites that use too many resources off their servers with little or no warning. CWI Hosting has a bad reputation as well.

Lenny, if you've been using only 3gb of transfer and 7mb of disk space it really doesn't sound like you need a dedicated server yet! There are plenty of hosts that know how to host MySQL databases. Since you've enabled e-mail on this board I'm sure you'll get offers from several of them. Once you've got a few and looked at their services, be sure to come back here and ask about the reputations of any hosts you're considering. We could have warned you off CWI Hosting, as just one example. See the last link in my signature for some host-finding help.

Good luck!
