Checking the registry we can know the real registrar. After that, and knowing if the whois info is yours or not, we can evaluate what options you have.
What's your home language? If you have problems with english you may be lucky enough to find someone to help you in your own language, you could be from the same country as me

Is this good idea? Domain is about to expire, there are obviously some complications to renew it, etc...
CUFC, I would suggest you same as elmister said. You can also use some domain whois service like:http://whois.domaintools.com/http://www.allwhois.com/
etc..
Good luck.

then it will be directnic or more likely one of their many resellers/associates - if you contact them they will tell you - or you can check your emails for renewal notices etc

As DirectNIC are the ultimate registrar, you can start with them, if they direct to a reseller then go to the reseller, if the reseller cant or wont help, go back to DirectNIC.
At the end of the day it is the reponsability of the registrar, in this case DirectNIC.

I've had about everything happen to me in the world of domain purchases. I once forgot to renew a domain name, but was given 30 days in which to "redeem it" before it was thrown into the junk pile of domains that can be purchased by the general public on the Net.
I paid about $30 bucks to get that domain name back. Pretty steep for me, on the modest budget I allow myself.
Good Luck.

As far as I know some registrars provide about month for a domain to be renewed after it expires!

Yes,registrars provide about 1 month of domain lease time before it is abandoned.
you might still catch the train.
