View Full Version : Help a beginner please...
mike051987 10-31-2008, 11:45 PM Hi. I am wanting to host my own webpage using IIS on my XP Pro machine. I have the page built, the domain name is purchased, and I can access the page by typing in ht*tp://localhost/.
Now I would like to be able to access my page over the web by typing in my domain name. I know I have to link the page to my computer's IP, but I have no idea how. Can someone please help me?
kilko 11-01-2008, 02:12 AM Do you have a static IP assigned by your ISP?
mike051987 11-01-2008, 01:13 PM Yes, but the line runs into my router and the machine I am wanting to host on uses a static private ip. Is it still possible to host like this?
mike051987 11-01-2008, 01:24 PM I take that back, it's dynamic but I heard I can use DDNS?

I agree.
It's not worth hosting at home unless you want to study and have fun with it.
Coryvmcs1 11-04-2008, 10:19 PM If you are just wanting to learn about IIS and it's functions then hosting a site in home on your pc will do the job. Depending on your isp if you have a static or dynamic ip this can be done either way using a static ip or dydns. some routers even offer the ability to put your dydns info into it and link it that way.
If you plan on running mail services you need to make sure you set your mx records up properly as well as asking your isp for a ptr record.
It's not generally a best practice to do this because a. your home pc is your home pc and is subject to major threats against microsoft and your router is probably most likely a simple firewall router.
Hope this helps answer some of your questions.:)
LiveHelpGuy 11-04-2008, 11:55 PM Hi, you can search for sites that'll help with dynamic DNS; check your favorite search engine for free dynamic ip or free DDNS.
You'll probably also need to enable PORT FORWARDING on your router; check your router docs on how to do that. But as others have mentioned, that computer would then be accessible by the world - SECURE IT!
Lastly, my guess is that running any type of 'server service' on your residential internet connection violates your ISP TOS.

Good reply, he may have to have a dedicated t1/ds3 line installed at home to do so.
hostmaster77 11-18-2008, 07:20 AM You can go with a software named "Team Viewer"
try it!!
may it can help u.
PRTLLC 12-19-2008, 01:19 PM You may need to open the uPnP port on your router. And as mentioned before, security will be a concern.

This of course will be typical of replies at WHT. No big deal. To be expected etc.
That being said, the fact that you asked the question in the first place indicates a tech level that is only going to find you spending too much of your time figuring out network issues and not enough on what you wanted to do in the first place.
There is free Windows hosting which might be good for hobby experimenting.
Otherwise look for low cost packages perhaps from Windows hosters in my thread:
