cPanel, announced this week the release of version 11.24 of their industry leading server management software. Version 11.24 introduces a new initiative to cPanel’s software, cPanel Accelerated. cPanel Accelerated brings new features designed to decrease system resource usage and increase speed and performance significantly from previous versions.
A substantial portion of the codebase of cPanel and the x3 interface itself has been streamlined and made to perform better and require less bandwidth. Also available as part of cPanel Accelerated are two alternatives for DNS and IMAP. The NSD nameserver can reduce memory usage for DNS functions by up to 40% over BIND. On busy nameservers that can add up to a huge resource savings. Also included in version 11.24 is Dovecot IMAP as an alternative to Courier IMAP. Dovecot provides up to a 25% reduction in disk I/O as well as using between 10% to 70% less memory then Courier. Security has also been enhanced with the reworking of cPanel’s process monitoring daemon to include service specific verification which helps to improve the security of running processes. Backups are faster too. Pkgacct 8 has been reworked to become significantly faster then previous versions. That means you can safely backup your data and restore it, both incrementally & non-incrementally much more quickly then previous versions. This all adds up to increased performance, reduced resource usage and ultimately a more efficient webhosting operation for cPanel customers.
As of Thursday, 10/30/2008, 11.24 and all its new enhancements will be available in the CURRENT build of cPanel. 11.24 will then make its way into the STABLE tree later in November. The best part of upgrading to 11.24 is that it’s very simple. Also, many of the improvements introduced require no user interaction, they just work.

Haven't had a chance to play - like the usual cPanel stuff, I like to wait a bit until it filters down. Anyone have any specifics?

I'm curious about this as well. I see the options available in the release build however I'm hesitant to switch away from BIND..is the structure for rDNS zones the same or will that ruin all of the customized zones we have setup?
Also, on a side note, is VPS Optimized version visibly different than regular full cPanel/WHM ?

The switch to dovecot is definitely nice. It's great that cPanel is focusing on full optimization of its software.

It sounds great but I play it semi safe by running RELEASE. So you guys keep testing it on current then when most of the bugs are out and it's production ready I'll run it :)

Can't really see a performance difference on a dev server, a few different options and a updated logo with "Accelerated" added to it.

Has anyone had any serious problems upgrading to this version on a live server with clients?
I would like to try the upgrade out but I am concerned about breaking the dns for client sites.

Didnt see any performance increase. It has alot of new features or options. But if youre talking about memory usage it increased by a few MB (so it seems) and cpu usage remains the same.
NSD failed for me...I'm not sure if you guys got it running so I went back to named. Can't afford any downtime.

NSD doesn't work on our clustered DNS so it's effectively not an option, although the rest of the update looks to be nice.

You won't break the DNS. The DNS server does not upgrade to the new system automagically when you go to 11.24.0; you must manually change the DNS system if you want to use it.
There are some really helpful notes on the move to 11.24.0 in this thread (http://forums.cpanel.net/showthread.php?t=97593) ...
Also there are very detailed release notes here (http://www.cpanel.net/products/cpwhm/releases/releasenotes/11.24/index.html) which explain exactly how the new stuff works, how to upgrade to the new Dovecot and NSD if you want it, etc. etc.
I have to give cPanel a lot of credit on this one, the release notes are absolutely terrific. :)

I switched to NSD and sounds like it broke my DNS!
Anyone else having similar issue?
Note that I am not using clustered DNS.

Does anyone have a server that NSD is failing on or some error log output? Please open a ticket with us if you're having any issues. For those of you who are having NSD issues, are you switching to NSD under Nameserver Selection or just getting emails that the service has failed?
