I know, i know, for many of you this is a stupid question... but honestly i don't know what does the lil number on server load really means. (RH)

If I have a Server Load or load average of 0.10... out of what? out of 100%?? this means i'm using less than 1% of the server capacity? or 1.00 means 100%??

Thanks in advance :)

Hi,

There's a whole thread on this somewhere here... but in short, it's the # of processes waiting for resources. Resources meaning memory, disk I/O, or CPU. So if any of the above start getting maxed out, load will rise as processes wait for resources to become available. Load of 0.99 means a perfectly utilized machine -- nothing ever has to wait for resources, but you're using everything available.
