With the price of dedicated servers going so low these days, is there a market for Virtual Private Servers?

JayC 09-09-2002, 04:44 PM Seems pretty clear what he means: since you can get a dedicated server for around $100/month these days, why would anyone get a VPS (or whatever term the particular provider uses for it) for roughly the same price? But the fact is that even though there are $100/month dedicated servers available, there's still a market for $300, $400, and $1000 dedicated servers -- the difference being more powerful hardware, better and more reliable connectivity, and superior support. Same holds true when you expand the discussion to include VPS. Generally, if you're paying say $90/month for a VPS, you should be getting a level service greater than you would if you paying essentially the same price for a dedicated server. You're not getting your own box all to yourself, but you should be getting a piece of a much better system, a better network, better support, etc., than you would with a low-budget dedicated server. I have a VDS/VPS thats just a small one, like 32mb ram, I wanted it to just be able to test things that I wouldn't put on a server of its own... I think I pay 5/month, so yeah, there prolly is still a decent market for VDS/VPS... davidb 09-09-2002, 05:09 PM I think it will slowly take over shared hosting, nice spot for those who dont want to pay for a server and dont want shared. Two reasons I think its small 1. Not enough people know about it 2.
