10 years is the max, I believe after that they have to expire.

Nope. You could simply *renew* it, for another 10 years if you like.

That doesn't make senses, so I could buy microsoft.com after 10 years. I believe the answer is that you have the chance to renew the domain, not give it up.

The max is 10 years for a registration or renewal. You never lose the domain unless you don't renew it. I've seen Network Solutions offer 100 yrs for $1000.
All the best,

I thought the max anyone could offer was 10 years. How can Network Solutions offer 100??

Because they bank the money and only add one year at a time to keep it at the ten year maximum. Do you trust anyone with your money for 100 years? Do you even think the Internet will be the same & we will still be using .com domain names in 100 years? Or even in 20?

Well, it's been going since 85 or thereabouts now..
That and the internet isn't going anywhere anytime soon.
I'm betting on at least 10 more years of .com :)
DNS is the best way to route names to IP's, unless that basic concept is replaced with some new one, I don't see why we would ditch DNS.
But with this new ICANN gTLD proposal, you are right, .com might loss a lot of weight in the coming years. (not dns though)
