Have any of you approached local businesses (churches, business groups, etc) and offered them free hosting provided that they display your hosting banner at the bottom of every site page? If so, has it worked out in your favor?
If it has, how do you get your banner added to the bottom of each of their pages? Is there some way to do this automatically in a cpanel/WHM server?

I think you have an option in ad manager script, just check openads.com

Doubt it would pay off - its hard to do as is when you offer it free online ;).
I would recommend checking out the "starting a web hosting business" section for a bit more insight.
I believe most people use mod_layout with Apache to force ads.

Unfortunately, when I tried to point to www.openads.com , I got a 404. :(

Thanks. Been around a while in this forum and already done that. Just looking for fresh ideas. ;)
As for the mod_layout, thank you. I will look into that. :)

You only have 10,000~ some odd posts ;).
Wasn't trying to reprimand, just habit to point out if a topic appears to be in the wrong forum (or I could be crazy).
The mod_layout route is a little less "user friendly" in setting up.. there's some "free web hosting" control panels that will automate the process for you.. granted their names escape me at the moment.

openads is known as openx these days. I'm not aware of the feature Biju referred to, but I've had no need to look for such either.
granted their names escape me at the moment. xpanel and ipanel would be two of them.
As the freely hosted sites would not be random, there's always the honor system. Their designer just places the ad on their pages. From time to time, you check if they've removed it. Even if you put it automatically, ways to cover it up etc. can be devised by "enterprising" users.
appears to be in the wrong forum I'll move it in the Running a Hosting Business a it's primarily a marketing related question I feel.

Haha, 10,000+ posts means nothing. Just means I'm an old timer, who should know better as to where to search. :)
As for the mod_layout, I will just do some research.
Thanks.

Generally I would think a church or local business would go down the "Find a designer and ask them to build the site and sort out hosting" I would highly doubt you'll find businesses after web hosting but not a website. Be careful you don't accidentally agree to build someones site for them, their definition of "web hosting" and your definition of "web hosting" may differ greatly :D

Yeah, you definitely need to be careful. Although, I would not be adverse to taking on any design projects that came my way. I would just need to be careful to separate the two.

I have run many free hosts that involved different ad strategies. It really is case by case scenario, it's not how many sites you host but what kind and how much traffic your hosted sites actually generate. Mod_layout is the foremost forced ad system I know.
Freewebhostingtalk.com is a iNet site where you might get several answers from people running free hosts.

Is there some way to do this automatically in a cpanel/WHM server?I thought cPanel did things "automagically". :)

I've actually been hosting churches for free the past 7 years. Even though it doesn't bring in any more business that I've noticed, I feel good doing it.
