I realize that this is somewhat unrelated, but i see a decent number of Aussies around, so I though I might get a good reply.
I was wondering if anybody could recommend good merchant/gateway providers for use by Australia based business selling computer hardware.
P.S. I know some people use 2checkout, but it's more of complete billing solution, so it's more pricey

We're from Australia [have servers in the USA :D] and use http://revecom.com [aka Paysystems.com]. Very pleased with them. I get paid weekly [every Friday] from the closing balance from the previous Sunday. :agree:

You could also consider www.paymate.com.au as a payment solution. It doesn't offer any any "cart" or API solutions yet but it is an efficient payment system on its own.
They have some good plans for enhancement later this year, but are tied up at present working on an electronic GST payment solution with the ATO.

Gary, I still don't like the fact that with paymate the buyer is charged a fee. I know this is the model the ACCC wants to see introduced across retail, but it is just one more thing that could lose the sale IMHO.
I am using hostcharge at this mo in time to process trans in US$ and AU$.

I could be wrong here...but I'll explain what I have found out. The Reserve Bank recently introduced the ability for *all* retailers to charge credit card users additional fees to cover those they are charged as a part of their merchant facility. I know that there has been a "add 5% extra for credit card payment" in play with some various retailers for quite some time, but now it has come down from the Reserve Bank. This was only brought in about 3 weeks ago. I actually caught the segment on the news only a few days after Paymate explained it to me.
So to cut a long story short, there is a chance that this will become a more common occurence as retailers discover this new found wealth. :) Consumers might start to see small additional charges on the ticket of an item they are going to pay for by credit card. The ACCC will simply be given the task of ensuring the system is implemented fairly.
However Paymate are going to introduce a system whereby the vendor has the option to *visually* absorb all the costs. That is, you're still looking at ~2% + ~2% but the whole 4% can be attributed to the vendor. That will make it more appealing than it is right now. The fees as they stand are certainly appealing consider it is still simply a 3rd party solution.
