Just trying to get a feel for what different hosting companies use for their billing preferences. Obviously this will be different depending on your business model and business practices.

How do you invoice, in advance or arreas? If in arreas, why? I.e. dedicated servers/voip, so you can add bandwidth/call charges then bill accordingly?

At the moment we bill in advance. If someone signs up on the 1st of the month, we simply invoice them on the 1st of the months going forward. This is all very well until a customer misses the payment then their account gets suspended.

Do you think there is any problem with sending out invoices say 14 days before, and actually taking the service fee 7 days before it's due?

What billing preferences do you use, and why? Or have you just stuck to the modernbill/whmcs default settings...?

Like you said, it's very much a personal preference.

Personally, I *hate* it when I get a an email invoice from a vendor and then two seconds later, I'll receive an email payment receipt.

As such, we do exactly as you mentioned. We issue invoices 14 days before it's due & credit card payments are sent for processing 7 days for the invoice is due.
